Buick GSX 1970 Description
Everyone was building top-shelf muscle in 1970, but the truth is that the Buick GSX was the all-time torque champion. Making 510 pounds of twist, the GSX made the gentleman's racer into a legitimate predator. This 1970 Buick GSX tribute is an affordable way to own a piece of the legend for a very affordable price.Saturn Yellow was one of only two choices on your GSX (the other being Apollo White) and it's got an in-your-face impact that's hard to ignore. Add in the black stripes, a rear deck spoiler, and a few GSX badges, and, well, this car is easy to spot and hard to ignore. The Skylark is already one of the best-looking of GM's intermediates and you can tell that the guys at Buick didn't feel like playing second fiddle to anyone when they dreamed this one up. Of course, as a tribute, it's important to get the big stuff correct, so the yellow paint is suitably bright, the bodywork underneath is good, and the twin-snorkel hood wears correct black stripes with red pinstripe outlines and a hood tach. It was repainted within the last twelve months, so it looks pretty danged good overall, with nice detailing and great gaps all around. Little stuff like the body-colored headlight bezels, blacked-out grilles, and shiny chrome bumpers all add to the car's image and it makes just as much of a statement today as it did 45 years ago.The transformation from Skylark to GSX was carried over to the interior, where you get bucket seats flanking a center console, just as the General intended for a proper muscle car. The upholstery is in excellent condition with newer carpets and what appear to be original door panels with GS badges added. The gauges and dash pad are unquestionably original and in decent shape, and it's got functional factory A/C, which is always a very welcome feature in a vintage cruiser like this. Even Buicks received the horseshoe shifter, which has its own unique look, and the three-spoke steering wheel adds a suitably sporty look. The AM/FM/iPod radio is a neat fit in the dash and still sounds good and the wood appliques on the console are nicely done, lending the interior an upscale feel that's often lacking in the Buick's lesser cousins. The trunk is in good order with correct spatter paint and lots of room for your stuff.A 455 cubic inch Buick V8 may not be built to the level of the original GSX powerplant, but it's definitely no slouch. Upgrades include a high-rise intake manifold, a big 4-barrel carb, and a later HEI distributor to light it all up. Dante Red paint on the block and a Stage 1 decal remind us this big block is a Buick, and it makes the kind of legendary torque that these cars were famous for delivering. It starts easily and runs well and the TH350 3-speed automatic shifts without hesitation, even under full throttle. The completely custom exhaust system is brand new, and includes Flowmaster mufflers and long-tube headers for a spectacular soundtrack. There's also a new gas tank out back, a 12-bolt rear end, and correct Buick road wheels with 215/65/15 front and 225/70/15 rear white-letter radials.Available for pennies on the dollar compared to a real GSX, this one offers 90% of the performance and 100% of the look, which should make everyone very happy.
