Buick Skylark 1972 Description
Up for sale is my 1972 Buick GSX clone. Very clean extremely powerful and a great driver! Took 2nd place last year and year before at local Buick/GM show in south central PA…was bested by a ’70 GS (original) that had ~$90K worth of restoration according to the owner so I’m okay with that. Owned the car going on 9 years now but it’s time to move on. Two reasons why I’m selling (although this has been a very tough decision for me)… 1) I am in the market now for a new Ford GT-500...and most importantly 2) my wife told me she will only allow one toy in the household not two. I’m okay with that (I think) but quite honestly it will be hard to part with the Buick. Has been a blast to drive…and it only comes out of the garage when the sun is shining. The style is cloned from what I understand to be a 1 of 1 from ’71 (Ref: page 117 Rare Dealer Bulletins for Buick GS Stage-1 & GSX Reference Book Version III (dated 1992) by Steven Dove) except mine has the hood tac the original did not. Everything works (all interior/exterior lights guages including the three under the dash rear window defogger wipers heater seat belt warning light and buzzer for both front seats even the small rear view mirror map light works) but with two exceptions: 1) windshield washer fluid motor and 2) cigarette lighter are inop…but I never drive it in any kind of bad weather and I don’t smoke so I never really bothered with either of them…although both should not be too difficult to replace by the new owner. I do have an Original Parts Group [new] form-fit carpet (black) along with the under carpet sound proofing but I simply have not yet gotten around to replacing the existing carpet although the existing remains in pretty good shape. Redid the dash a few years back…re-chromed the plastic and replaced bezels to include the radio bezel (dash looks like new) installed year correct clock replaced all bulbs replaced radio with year correct refurbished unitreupholsteredboth front buckets to include new foam padding plastic trim and chrome replaced heater/vent cables and OEM dash speaker door sills and glove compartment liner. Has its original Buick chrome tissue dispenser under the glove compartment (swings out). Also replaced the water pump pwr steering pump fuel lines brake lines R/R axle seal and bearing installed new ladder bars (both painted in the same color as the car striping…2002 GM gold) replaced fuel sending unit front disk pads/both front rotors and both rear drums L/F ball joint and center link weather stripping for both doors and trunk water hoses etc etc…the normal stuff that wears over many years. I would not hesitate to drive this car cross country. A 1972 Buick Service Manual and bulletins come with the car. The engine is a ’71 date coded 455ci pushing an advertised 350 HP and 510 ft-lbs of torque…Offenhauser 360 Equa-Flow intake manifold and Edelbrock 750 electric choke carb...also installed an MSD with Blaster 2 coil (replaced the original HEI which will come with the car as the HEIs were known to cut out with age and when running at higher RPM). Car originally came as a 350ci 2bbl with a TH350. Previous owner installed the rebuilt 455 engine with Lunati "Hemi Killer" cam and lifters…produces a “pounding symphony”…awesome through the headers and flowmasters. Rest of drive train is the reliable 3-speed TH400 turbo-hydramatic (many consider one of the best tranny’s GM ever built) connected to an 8.5" BOP 10-bolt rear with 3:42 gears (Auburn 28 spline and 3.42 Liberty Gear which were professionally installed about 5 years ago…car originally came with 2:56 gears...previous owner said he had 3:08s installed...I upgraded to the 3:42s to be in line with the GSX specs). Tires are in great shape…lots of tread left…fronts P235/60R15s and rears P275/60R15s. All four rims are date correct rally's like new (6" fronts and 7" rears) with rally wheel center caps…really sets off the ride. Has the rally steering wheel power steering and power brakes. Also replaced the shocks in front and added air shocks in rear which give it a great stance. Bumpers and rubber have been replaced...have minor blemish on rear bumper above the Buick logo and some minor wear above the tail lights; otherwise chrome on both bumpers is very nice. Also comes with the bumper guards both front and rear…adds to the classic look.I have all the receipts for the above items…and there is more but I won’t drone on…bottom line very well kept and a blast to drive. Very fast…not for the faint of heart! There are a few blemishes that come with cars of this age – first there is a raised area about 4-inches in diameter just behind the left rear window where it appears when the left quarter was replaced there was some brazing issues that occurred. It has not changed its shape since I’ve owned the car so I haven't had a need to mess with it. There is also one small area near the rear window at the left seam leading to the trunk lid with some corrosion/pitting (painted over). Was like this when I bought the car and it has not changed any. Also a small bubble just forward of the trunk lid near the rear window trim. Car also has some normal wear/tear (small items) such as one tiny ding on the left rear quarter and a few (very) small chips throughout but again not really noticeable. Paint is a 20-footer as they say…some minor swirling which is always tough to get rid of against black color but I’ve buffed most of it out over the years. I have tried to explain the car to the best of my ability and in total honesty…that to me is one of the most important aspects to selling on ebay…check my feedback. I am also selling my car locally so you know the drill…I may end the auction early without notice. This is a NO RESERVE auction...with a more than fair starting price. Will require $750.00 non-refundable down payment via Paypal within 48 hrs of auction ending...balance and car pick-up due within 7 days via cashier's check or cash no exceptions. If you want a Barrett quality show car then go to the other auctions currently listing GSX clones for example in the $40000+ range.
