“Rodman’s Red Beauty”
Iconic, attleship, ircraft Carrier, and-Yacht, utrageous, tunning…. all words synonymous with the 1959 Cadillac Series 62, he largest Convertible of its era. It was only built for one year and very few stunning rust-free examples have endured like this one.
This particular example was completely restored in the late 90’s and was gifted from Jim Jannard, he stylish genius behind Oakley Sunglasses, o the outlandish and ever flamboyant Dennis Rodman of Chicago Bulls fame. Rust-free specimens like this Red beauty relish one place, outhern California, here this one appears to have spent its entire life.
No other car quite captures the essence of the “jet age” quite like the 1959 Cadillac, ith styling that could have been copied from a fighter plane. While many believe that the Cadillac’s tail fins were a product of the 1950’s, heir use actually dates back to GM’s 3/8-scale “Interceptor” design studies of the early 1940s, hich were inspired by the radical P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft of World War II.
Can there only be but one color for a 1959 Cadillac “Big Fin” Convertible…RED!!! The 1959 Series 62 Convertible is one Rare Bird these days. Just do a search and see how many are out there... not many.
The 1959 Cadillac’s styling is almost impossible to describe. Over the top, xcessive–innovative? How about all of the above. Even though the new Cadillac sat on a slightly shorter wheelbase than the previous year, t looked a foot longer. While the most prominent feature was the outlandish tail fin with dual, ointed tail-lamps, very body panel was beautifully sculpted.
A view of the front end represented a look that was light years ahead of any other car. The grille featured a vast array of bulleted sections; Optional fog lamps graced the lower twin pods in the front bumper; The front-end design was massive and oozed “expensive.”
The interior was redesigned and was arguably the most luxurious interior of any domestic car for 1959. First off, t was big: Cadillac was designed to seat six in comfort, nd did so without flinching. Those seats are covered in the finest leather. The instrument panel was designed around the driver, nd included all of the necessary gauges and warning lights.
This particular example is visually stunning in appearance. Is it a concour car? No, owever this is the perfect candidate for an easy transition to the ultimate level. Personally, ho really wants a perfect car. In fact, his car is “perfect” in that it is exceptional without being so over the top that you would never drive it. This is the type of car that you could take to almost any regional or local show and be proud to display. Moreover, et in it and “float” all the way to Vegas for a fun filled weekend, hile simultaneously being the talk of the town. You can have parties in this moving condo!!
The body and paint are phenomenal. Personally, buy BODY! That is the hardest part to ever get right, specially on these long curving side surfaces, here even the slightest imperfections jump off the page. Study these large format pictures and see if you can pic up anything in that body. These is one very small crack in the paint under the front headlight that I found, aybe a half an inch and barely discernible.
The body on this car to me is 99.9 out of 100. I can see no place in the body structure that ever looks like it was hit in even a minor way. The body panels are laser straight and all shut lines are near perfection and matching all the way around the car. I took pictures of the at fore and aft of both door gaps, runk and hood.
The paint I would call a 9.5 out of 10. While it was painted approximately 17 years ago it was done by an extremely high-dollar shop that took it all the way to the metal and obviously spent hundreds of hours blocking and blocking to perfection. The fact that the paint is still looking fresh and new is a testament to the money spent on this restoration. The paint is FLAT, MOOTH, EEP and lustrous.
The Chrome on the car as well shines in at 9.5 out of 10. It is old school looking (deep, mooth and rich looking), ith little to no defects and matching condition all the way around the car. The emblems and trim pieces are exceptional and all look like newly restored, efinitely not cheap reproduction replacements. The window surround may be original to the car, ’m not sure.. but it is surely in outstanding condition. All rubber and inner window felt is as new.
I might add, ince restoration this car has seen very little time outdoors and has spent every day of it’s life indoors and the last eight years in probably the nicest sub-climate in the world. The current owner has driven the car minimally, ut has maintained the car with yearly oil changes and regular starting and driving around his exclusive neighborhood to keep the engine and transmission in optimum running order. Check out the wonderful garage it has lived in with the latest owner, n the video link provided.

Original Parts Group thought so much of this car they put it on the front and back cover of their catalog. A copy of the Catalog goes with the car, n addition to registrations dating back to Dennis Rodman’s ownership.
The entire interior was restored and is in excellent condition with some slight wear at the bolster on the driver side. The interior probably has not been cleaned thoroughly in probably a while, o the pictures do not look as good as they should. The owner has since taken the car to a high-end detail shop and the entire interior look tremendous. The leather on the seats is of super high-quality, upple and comfortable. They were obviously completely rebuilt in the restoration process and that makes a huge difference. You could cruise across America in these seats and feel like you never left the comfort of your living room.
Door panels, ash and all interior surfaces are in exceptionally nice shape. The carpet is the highest quality deep pile. The glass appears to be original to the car and in excellent shape. The front windshield may have been replaced during restoration because it is just too pristine.
The ride quality on this behemoth is beyond words… it just simply floats. If you know the feel of an original Cadillac from this era you know what I am talking about. All suspension parts look brand new with very little wear, tanding testament to the leisured life since it was restored for Dennis.
The mechanicals are in top order on this example, t runs strong on the original rebuilt motor and will cruise comfortably or sit in dense traffic without the slightest hint of overheating. It cruises down the road at 80 mph straight and true with your hands off the wheel.
This vehicle is the result of a comprehensive restoration and it appears that the odometer was reset to zero after restoration and is showing 1573 now. I know it would be nice to actually know the mileage of the car since it began life, ut when a car goes through a rigorous restoration as this has, t is essentially a brand new car.
You will find the aftermarket stereo in the glovebox is done tastefully and provides ample sound quality into the cabin with the top down. It is Satellite Radio ready and supports WMA & MP3’s.
We did not get time to take pictures of the undercarriage on a lift, ut I can assure you it is a clean and you will find on a 1959 Cadillac. Again, testament to the Southern California lifestyle this car has enjoyed.
Just as a matter of reference, have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 20 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many makes of cars. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, ust so you have a reference. This car is a VERY high quality motorcar, t is a very strong #2 car. Again, his would be the kind of car to take to the highest level if a new buyer was so inclined. This car will show very well at the highest form of automobile judging as it sits.
In today’s world of collector cars, t’s important to be careful with what you’re buying. The true investment-grade cars are those with proof that they are what they appear to be, nd the best cars to own are those that have been correctly and authentically restored. This Series 62 is all that, earing its factory-issued colors, nd carefully restored using correct original pieces. Handsome, ast, nd nicely finished, his Cadillac is exactly the kind of car we all wish we could own, nd here’s your chance.
