Intro:
For your consideration is this very nice ready to enjoy 1991 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 that has traveled 67k miles. It is in original un-modified condition. It is painted in its original Artic White color, retains its original unmodified LT5 engine, and is in stock spec in other aspects as well. It is very presentable on the exterior as well as the interior. The engine is extremely healthy as is the transmission. This vehicle has had some recent maintenance and runs and drives great the way it sits right now.
Many people do not realize how big a deal the Corvette ZR1 really was.The nickname “King of the Hill” was well suited due to its world class performance in the early 1990s.This model earned multiple world records, most related to high speed endurance trials. This is a testament to the rock solid reliability of the LT5 engine and it is well known among ZR1 owners just how solid these engines are.Lotus was a main contributor towards the engine design. The LT5 engine kept the same 5.7L displacement but was all aluminum, had dual overhead cams, 32 valves, which resulted in 375 horsepower, 370 lb-ft of torque, and a 180 mph top speed for 1991.The ZR1 had other upgrades like wider wheels and tires and an upgraded suspension. The ZR1 option just about doubled the Corvette’s sticker price to about $68,000 in 1991 money. In 1991 only 2044 ZR1s were produced and 351 of them being Artic White. These are very special vehicles that only enthusiasts tend to be familiar with. There are lots of great resources and reading materials out there specifically about the ZR1 model like Anthony Young’s “The Heart of the Beast” book and ZR1netregistry.com.
These C4 ZR1s are of course very fun to drive. The horsepower, torque, and sound from the exhaust is exciting. These Corvettes actually are comfortable enough to be used for daily transportation. Most areas have strong Corvette Club participation and the legendary ZR1 tends to be well received.Ownership is further made enjoyable with parts being less expensive and more readily available compared to other classic exotics. The ZR1 is a great option for the sports car/collector car enthusiast and this 1991 Corvette is a great example that is ready to be enjoyed as it is.Please continue below to see a video of the car, extensive photos, and a further detailed description.
Video:
A 7 minute long high definition video is provided to better show the condition of this Corvette. The video footage was taken in October of 2016. Please note, for the driving footage the microphone was mounted right next to the license plate and the rattle that can sometimes be heard is the license plate, not the suspension or exhaust. To view an even higher resolution version of an image on PhotoBucket, click the magnifying glass icon that shows up in the right corner of the image. Some of the images show some black dots which was dirt that was in my camera, not marks on the car.Exterior:
This Corvette’s exterior is very presentable. It is of the condition that it is plenty nice to be able to be taken to various car shows, club events, and cars and coffee, though is not a flawless museum piece. The white finish is the original color and is in very nice condition. The color matches throughout on the panels. Significant issue like crazing, cracks, peeling, major orange peel, and other related issues are absent. The finish looks nice, is smooth, is glossy, clean, and shows only some limited, minor, and typical markings from use. For example, the driver side corner of the front bumper has a couple minor chips. The driver side corner of the rear bumper has a very minor scuff about 1” tall. The driver side mirror has a minor scuff on its edge. Other miniscule nicks here and there exist but those listed spots really are the most significant marks (Please Note: two black dots show up in just about every picture which is dust in my camera not marks on the paint). The finish really does look as good in person as it does in the photos. The car looks impressive and very clean for the age. When looking down the side of the car the finish is glossy and smooth. The finish should look this nice for quite some time.
The body itself on this Corvette is in very nice condition. For a plastic bodied sports car the panels overall line up well. The rear and front bumper lips are not all wavy like I have seen on some Vettes.Absent is any evidence of accidents or significant damage. The panels like the doors, hood, and rear quarters are very straight, lacking evidence of any kind of repair. The body is of the condition that should be expected for a very well taken care of exotic sports car.Other aspects of the exterior are presentable as well. The rims are in nice shape with only limited markings. The lips shine as does the painted areas. The glass throughout is in very nice condition with no significant stone impacts or cracks present.Lenses throughout are very nice and absent of cracks. The original weather stripping was cracking so just installed were new door and targa top weather strips. The engine bay is very presentable as well. One could do a bit more detailing to the engine to shine it up even further but it looks nice as it is.The underbody looks as it should and there is not much to it as it is very flat.
This ZR1 is very presentable on the exterior. It is of the quality that its next caretaker can just stand in the garage and stare and admire it.
Interior:
The interior on this Corvette overall is in nice condition. It shows some wear but it is not excessive for the mileage or age nor distracts from the presentation or enjoyment of the car. There is no evidence of this vehicle having been smoked in. There are no odd smells or other funny business going on. The interior on the ZR1 is a comfortable place to be, and actually somewhat quiet. The power seats still are functioning and have plenty of adjustability. The steering wheel has tilt. These Vettes were designed for American buyers so just about any body size should be able to find comfort. The door panels are in real nice shape showing only minimal use. The original head liner was drooping so a new proper color and material one has been installed. The steering wheel and some switch areas show some typical wear and use, though not excessive. The driver seat has typical wear on its bolsters from entering and exiting the vehicle. There are a few other cracks and small splits in the leather. It is not excessive or to the point of it needing to be replaced. The passenger seat is of course in nicer shape. The carpets overall are good. New “ZR1” floor mats have been installed. The dashboard and vents are good and absent of cracks or significant issues. Basically the interior looks as it should be expected for the age and mileage of the car. Enjoy it as is or do a few things here and there to make it even better. But, as stated, the interior still is a pleasant place to be and does not distract from the presentation of the car.
Mechanical:
It is well known among ZR1 enthusiasts how great, reliable, and solid its drivetrain is. This 1991 ZR1 is no exception and is in great shape mechanically. It should only be needing regular maintenance and is ready to be driven and enjoyed as it is. The engine starts on the first time and sets into a consistent idle on its own. No puffs of smoke out the back. The car drives fine no matter warm or cold with no sputtering or hiccups. It keeps a constant temperature no matter the weather or traffic. The oil pressure is healthy. The engine itself sounds great and absent are any odd valve noises, rattles, or the related. The engine has all the power it should and feels just as strong as the LT5 would be expected to feel. It has gobs of torque down low and pulls strong up through the rev range, without any sputtering, blowing smoke, burning oil, or other issues. It sounds healthy too and the addition of the cat-back Borla exhaust helps increase the audio enjoyment. For those needing to pass emissions, the catalytic convertors are still present and functioning. There are absolutely no check engine or any other warning lights that pop up on the dash. The earlier year ZR1s have a different computer chip so the idle stays up higher between gear shifts so that is normal for this year. The gauges work. The ZR1 actually gets decent gas mileage as Lotus designed special features in the intake to conserve fuel when power is not needed. The valet key is present and for those unfamiliar it is a key that allows you to limit the horsepower that is available for drivers that should not be needing all of it.
The transmission shifts as it should and has a good feel.It is the proper 6 speed unit. There is absolutely no grinding in up or down shifting in any gear, no odd noises, or other issues.A new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder has been installed. The clutch works as it should and has good pedal feel. The brakes work as they should a no issues to note. The pedal is firm and braking is smooth, absent of rotor warp vibration. The parking brake works. The tires have a good amount of tread left but are starting to get dry.The steering system is in proper functioning order, absent of any odd noises, and has good feel. The suspension feels proper. It is in no way harsh like some people have stated about the C4.It feels sporting but yet comfortable enough for extended drives.
Conclusion:
The ZR1 is an affordable, reliable, and daily drive-able legendary sports car. It has more performance than is needed for the street. The ZR1 offers ownership perks like readily available parts and exclusivity but yet inclusion with other Vette enthusiasts and clubs. These are enjoyable vehicles to drive and to admire. This example is very presentable and is well sorted.
