Chevrolet Other 1951 Description
1951 Chevrolet Deluxe 2 Door Sedan
This vehicle was purchased new by Mr. Nick Lelle of Winslow IL on October 16 1951 from Marty-Ripp Chevrolet in Monroe Wisconsin. Included with the sale of the vehicle is original documentation including the purchase agreement bill of sale owners manual Powerglide transmission supplement factory quality control card engine break-in card (including the original key knockouts with original key codes) Delco battery warranty info chrome care instructions and owner service policy. All documents are safely stored in a brown folder with the dealership information on it including a new never used key chain.
My uncle purchased this vehicle in 1983. Through research he found that the original owner was the grandfather to a friend of my aunt. My aunt's friend learned to drive in this car! The exterior was repaired and repainted during the winter season of 1984-85. All chrome trim was removed during the exterior restoration process and reinstalled after the vehicle was painted. All chrome trim is original and has never been redone. The vehicle was repainted the original light green. The vehicle does have the skirts for the rear wheels but they are not installed on the vehicle. I do not believe the skirts to be the original parts for the car as they are a darker shade of green. Body filler was used during the restoration that is now 30 years old. The paint is laquer enamel. After performing a complete detail on the vehicle to clean up the exterior I did take note of imperfections in the finish. Some paint chips are present on the RF fender hood and trunk lid. Some cosmetic imperfections are also present based on the age of the restoration and the quality of the materials used 30 years ago. Some bubbling in the paint is present on the quarter panels and fenders noticeable from about 2-5 feet away. Some bubbling is present at the lower panel of the drivers door which is more noticeable. One crack is present in the rear valance panel below the taillamp assembly. Some rust scale is present underneath the trunk mat however it is only surface scale and not a structure concern. A minor scuff mark is present on the RR quarter panel.
The engine is the original inline six cylinder a 235 cubic inch. It is equipped with oil bath filters and a Rochester single barrel carb. I do have a reciept where it was last rebuilt in 1985. The vehicle will start and run however in its current condition fuel needs to be dumped down the carb for the engine to start. I am currently in the process of rebuilding the carburetor. Once running the engine is very smooth. It is unknown if it has ever been rebuilt the odometer shows 80k miles which I believe to be original. Some oil leaks are present including the valve cover gasket and distributor seal. Other leaks may be present but these two are known. The radiator has been replaced I do have the original radiator that will go with the purchase of the vehicle. The Powerglide automatic transmission shifts well though it is unknown the last time the fluid/filter was changed. I suggest future service along with service of all the other fluids. The tires and brakes were replaced in 1984. The tires are bias ply I would recommend replacing them with a period correct whitewall that is a radial tire for better handling and comfort. I have not removed the wheels but the brakes seem to work well with no issues present while I drove the vehicle however they were last replaced 31 years ago. At minimum a clean and adjust of the drum brake shoes is likely needed. The heater hoses to the heater core are not present it is unknown if a heater core leak is present or not.
The interior is mostly original the previous owner had the seats recovered and they are in good condition. The interior panels do show wear based on the age of the vehicle. The original spare tire is located in the trunk it is unknown if it has ever been installed to the vehicle.
Since my uncle purchased this vehicle it has been stored in a climate controlled garage - before and after it was restored. The frame rails and underbody of the vehicle do have some rust scale present nothing that seems to be of any structure concern. All exterior lamps work.
My personal opinion of this vehicle is that it is a driver quality vehicle that maintains many original components along with documentation to support the value of the car.
