Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1972 Description
I purchased this car in 2008 from the original owners Nephew at which time it had a verified 29,000 miles on it.This is an extremely early 72 which was protecto-plated on Aug 8th 1971 before the official cancel date of the Z20SS. The car was delivered on Sept 29th with SS454 badges to the Dealer. The original order was kicked back to the Dealer and Baltimore walked the dealer thru how to order as close to an SS as possible for 1972. This included the factory G67 air ride found on SS cars (yes with factory shock guard plates), heavier suspension, PO2 hubcaps and the "W" 454. The dealer installed the accessory bumper guards after delivery- -bumpers were NOT drilled.
The last time I looked at the First Generation Monte Carlo Registry- -There were only "4" numbers matching 72 "W" 454 cars listed. As I recall about 1,150 +/- of these cars were produced.
This car had sat for over 20 years at home in the garage and unfortunately was started and idled occasionally. Upon taking possession of the car it would barely run- -but had not been messed with. After taking compression readings and seeing 2 cylinders were low- -the motor was pulled and completely rebuilt. ALL dimensions are standard as crank only required polishing and cylinders showed negligible wear. However- -the CAM was FLAT- -imagine that on an idling Big Block.
I have driven this car over 7,000 miles to shows all over the country (drove to Telluride) and it runs great and is a joy to drive. The G67 air ride functions perfectly and sits on its original "SuperLift" Shocks.
Lots of documentation with the car: 2 build sheets, original shipper (as was special ordered), protectoplate, dealer invoice, original owners manual and much more. Statement from Nephew of mileage in 2008. Kansas Hi-Way Patrol verification of VIN, Engine # and mileage at time of registration.
This is a true original and was a featured survivor muscle car at the "2016 Telluride Concours".
The entire drive train is original to the car except for 1. dual horn air cleaner (nice original in box) 2.current starter (factory included in box), modulator and fan clutch.
All other components came with this car and "ALL" date codes are correct including: Carb, Distributor, Smog Pump, Water Pump, Radiator, Voltage Regulator, Vacuum Ride Pump, Kick Down Solenoid, Smog Valve, Alternator, 400 Transmission etc.
A Car Fax report may show an incident in 2010. Returning from a show I was bumped @ 3-4 MPH by a Suburban from the rear. As a result, the deck lid would require repaint and rear bumper re-chrome- -so instead the whole back end of the car was repainted in correct base clear to the back of doors. Quarters were stripped and found to be rust free (photos were taken). Vinly top chrome was removed to paint under the moldings. Doors, front fenders and hood are Original 1972 Duco Laquer and do show some checking and fogging. Vinyl top is near perfect.
Interior is exceptional and all original- -including near mint factory rubber mats. Trunk is incredible with no rust showing and original mat that shows wear. Spare is the factory "Custom Wide Tread" Poly-Glass G-70 with the factory sticker intact and has never been on the ground. The P02 hubcaps are exceptional for originals and "5" are included. The Rally caps and rings shown in photos are reproductions used to drive to shows and save the PO2's.
To be clear- -I am NOT claiming this is a 72SS454 Monte Carlo as "None" were officially built. But, it doesn't get any closer than this one!!
I have listed this car locally and nationally in other publications- -so it may not complete sale here.
