Chevrolet El Camino 1985 Description
PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION BELOW THOUROUGHLY!!I will do my best to describe the car in as much detail as possible, detailing what works and what doesn’t.This is a 32-year-old vehicle and is a driver, not a show car. It’s by no means perfect, but it is a good car that can be driven regular and be a driving project.Basically it’s a relatively sound car mechanically, with some cosmetic issues.
Basics
1985 El Camino SS (true SS with Z15 package, as verified by a copy of the dealer invoice (included; costs $50 from GM heritage center)
Original CA car from S&J Chevrolet in Cerritos, only recently relocated to TX
Mechanical
305 V8 with 4 bbl carb
3 speed automatic
45K on odometer; Carfax looks like it’s rolled over, so assume 145K
Car runs good.It has served as a weekend driver and even daily driver for some periods of time without any major issues. Never failed to start or stalled on me in the 3 yrs or so I’ve owned it.
New working A/C.All A/C components replaced (compressor, condenser, etc) and switched to R134A.
All accessories work:Power windows, power door locks, wipers, stereo
Window washer doesn’t work
Brakes and steering function properly
Not perfect though
Idle seems high
Occasionally, check engine light comes on when starting if its sat for a few days.Goes off after about 5 minutes
Rarely, it runs after shutting off for about 10 seconds
Slight oil leak, appears to be from main seal.
Interior
Restored at some point in the past
Newer black carpet
Reupholstered seats
Door panels and dash recovered in black vinyl
Newer headliner
Newer plastic trim in black
I’ve added:
New seat belts
New door sills
New window and door lock switches
Monte Carlo SS steering wheel and dash trim
Gauges work
Except temp gauge
Has aftermarket temp gauge below dash
Dash lights work, replaced with LED bulbs
Interior light works, replaced with LED bulb
Working aftermarket stereo; detachable face
New window sweeps and weatherstipping.
New El Camino floor mats (pictured) will be included $150 from OPGI
Issues to be aware of:
Horn, but has aftermarket wireless horn
Passenger door vinyl pulling away from door panel
Windows are loose and don’t seat right in the channel all the time.Need to pull off the door panel and adjust.
Tear on side of driver’s seat
Defroster button on dash is not connected.El Camino does not have a rear window defroster.
Purple-ish tint on quarter windows is peeling
Body
This is where the most issues are. There are LOTS of small dents, dings, scratches and peeling paint. The car had a cheap repaint at some point in its life. There is what appears to be a small crack in the header panel. The headlight bezels and grille have peeling paint.
Good stuff:
No rust
All glass is good
Newer BFG Radial T/A’s (only about 500 miles)
Vintage Chevy Rally Wheels with new trim rings and center caps
Newer rear bumper and new tail light housings
New OEM front spoiler (unpainted)
Rare snap on tonneau cover
All lights work, except one back-up light, and I think one side marker in the back.
Again, I’ve done my best to describe the car in as much detail as possible. Please ask any and all questions you have.
