Chevrolet Vega 1976 Description
Stuffing a performance-built small block into a compact classic is such a neat idea, especially when taken to this kind of extreme. When you combine a stroker motor with this 1974 Chevrolet Vega GT, you get 425 hp in a lightweight sleeper/screamer for a very affordable price. The Vega's economy car roots are the key to its initial sleeper personality. But anyone who gives this one a second glance will certainly know not to underestimate it. The full Screaming Yellow package has a great modern shine on everything. Plus, the black accents give it a bumblebee like look that proves someone put some time and effort into the appearance. That's why we love the added aggression in places like the full-length black decal package, blacked-out headlight surrounds, and a power dome hood that announces the serious V8 muscle underneath. And while everything including the bumpers follows this full yellow and black coordinated theme, there is some room on this compact coupe left for brightwork. Those shiny Weld Racing wheels do a great job of highlighting this Vega's cool stance.Step inside, and once again, there are some nice hints to the beast within. The deep dark presence on the bucket seats, door panels, headliner, and dash fit this car's personality perfectly. With features like the AM/FM stereo and ice-cold air conditioning, you could almost mistake this for a comfortable cruiser... but the roll cage across the rear seats instantly reminds you this is a much more serious machine. You strap into the RaceQuip harness, grab the NK4 steering wheel in your left hand, and the grasp Hurst pro-ratchet floor shifter with your right one. Oh yeah, the reason why the AutoMeter tach is your largest gauge is because that's your true lifeline as you live one quarter mile at a time. When you open the hood, the V8 looks like it has belonged there since day one. But investigate this a little further and you'll see a GM ZZ 383 cubic-inch crate engine. This stroker motor has been built with go-fast goodies such as Quick Fuel 680 CFM carburetor, hi rise aluminum intake, aluminum radiator, and Hooker Super competition long tube headers. The total package makes a wicked rumble, and the consignor says the motor has been dynoed at 425 horsepower. But this is much more than just a monster motor. The 700R4 four-speed automatic was specially built and fortified to handle all the extra power, and it even includes a 2,500 stall w/od lockup converter. All this power gets to the ground via Mosler axles with an Eaton locker and versatile 3.42 gear. The fuel cell and battery are now also in the trunk to help put weight over the rear wheels. Up front it retains the Vega's independent front suspension with disc brakes for great control. There are a ton more components and custom fabrications to go over that have fortified this Vega into a true speed machine, so call for all the details. This Vega GT has made its full transition from mild to wild, and a total performance build like this will never be this affordable again. So you need to call today or you might regret it tomorrow!
