Chevrolet Express 1948 Description

1948 CHEVROLET FLEETMASTER "WOODY" Full Restoration completed in 2007. All ORIGINAL & excellent condition. Stored in a climate controlled facility. The Fleetmaster station wagon was a popular offering for 1948. Built on a 116 inch wheelbase chassis it was powered by a 216.5 cubic-inch Chevrolet inline six that developed 90 horsepower. Base price of the Fisher-bodied station wagon was $2013. Total sales for 1948 were 10171 units. This was one of the smallest quantities manufactured of any Chevy vehicles of all time! Ash lumber was used as the structural base of the car and the main body of the car was constructed out of sheet metal. Leatherette was stretched over a wooden frame to create a roof. Side panels were constructed out of polished mahogany. Experts claim that the greatest flaw in the structural design was the wooden elements that broke down rapidly as a result of neglect. It had four doors and could accommodate up to eight passengers. The Fleetmaster came standard with a 216.5-cubic-inch 3.5-liter in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine. The engine was capable of producing 90 horsepower at 3300 rpm and 174 lb.-ft. of torque at 2000 rpm with a 6.5-to-1 compression ratio. It had a cast iron block and a one barrel carburetor. It was equipped with a three-speed manual transmission with vacuum assisted shifting. The 1948 Chevrolet was a rear wheel drive with semi-floating axles. It had 11-inch hydraulic drum brakes on both the front and rear with an internal expanding emergency break. The Fleetwood's front suspension was an independent coil the rear suspension was semi-elliptical leaf springs. The Fleetmaster had a total length of 207.5 inches with a 116-inch wheelbase. It had a matching total width and total height of 69.375 inches. The front tread was 57.625 inches and rear tread was 60 inches.
