The Restoration Process- Body On50 miles on restoration

Body & Paint

The Body shop specializing in Classic car restoration first stripped 6 layers of paint off the car down to bare metal. Then had the bed media blasted. There was no metal repair required anywhere due to rust. Both doors and hood were removed all trim bumpers weather stripping window whiskers etc. The body appears all factory with no replacement panels tailgate doors or fenders. AZ climate has been good for this Elky.

Both doors sagged just enough to affect the fit so doors were removed and new hinges installed. Once down to metal they found there was a fist size dent in the upper side of the right fender that was poorly repaired. That was pulled and re-repaired. Primered then 2 stage Base Coat/Clearcoat 1968 El Camino Matador Red was applied then wet sanded and polished to brilliant shine. The Bed was left unpolished so appears a semi flat surface. This can be polished if buyer wants that. There is one small dent (paint is not damaged) still in the bed on the bed fender well. (Too small to show up in photos and it may be possible to pull it out like they do hail dents. (PDR)

The body work is professional no waves or runs & straight down the sides. Paint quality is excellent certainly professional even without excessive orange peel. Clear coat shows no signs of deterioration. I would grade it at least an 8.5 to a 9. and consider it at least local show quality. Anyone that has seen it says "its beautiful" or "it looks brand new" or "looks too nice to drive." "The paint is awesome"

Body & Paint are certainly NOT just driver quality but not Concours either. Anyone would be proud to show this Elky off. It was driven only to mount the new wheels and tires and flush out the brake system so there are NO stone chips! There is no sign of any color on the body except Matador Red even in the door jambs. Panel fitment is good see photos. There is enough room to add door edge guards if you want that.

All the weather stripping was replaced rubber bumper/stopper pieces throughout whiskers at windows cowl vent screens and usual paint kit from OPGI installed.

SS Stripes & SS Blackout Grille************Not done so Buyer can decide.

I purposely did not blackout the front grille even though all SS396 Elkys had that. I

will have that painted if buyer requests it at no charge. It will be a perfect job and it will last.

I also did not paint low gloss black under the moldings as I personally like the car ALL red

especially with the Chrome Torque Thrust wheels. Buyer can do what they want.

Also The striping options are up to the new owner. You can do Hood Stripes like a 70 SS and

I have a picture of what it would look like with hood stripes.

Or do Factory header panel stripes and side stripes that run above the side moldings.

The stripe kit is about $150.

Chrome & Brightwork & Lenses

Just about everything replaced with the best NEW reproduction parts available mostly from OPGI. Both bumpers front and rear SS Badges tailgate bowtie badge side marker units Drip rails window surround complete stainless bed surround exterior door handles side moldings tailgate molding set complete grille system including front light bezels and hood lip trim..

Brake lights headlights front and rear signal lights and side marker lenses were replaced with new. There are some very fine hairlike scratches on the side door upper window metal frame. It's a shiny metal finish and these might be able to be polished out I don't know for sure.

Interior

Very nicely reconditioned. The headliner sail panels and both door panels and SS396 emblems were already replaced. Installed DYNMAT over entire floor and up behind rear kick panels. Floors were very solid only one hole the size of a pencil eraser that we filled with metal material. Replaced dash pad Floor shift boot and factory cover Glove box interior dome light cover all door & window cranks mirror cigarette lighter Lock knobs piller covers SS396 dash plaque carpeting Re-upholstered Bucket seats with PUI covers and new foam seat side shells and metal trim added. New GM authorized reproduction deluxe seat belt kits.

Dash and rear shelf and lower area repainted front kick panels repainted and new rear speaker kick panels installed to accommodate special 8ohm speakers for the FM Reverb system. All new wind lace and new sill plates..

InteriorAdds:

Grant wood steering wheel Custom storage box slips concealed into bed wall and a rebuilt factory AM/FM push button radio a rare option was installed with under dash Reverb unit "Stereo Magic." Its really a concert hall kind of sound that's really cool and really rare They were seen more common on Pontiacs and installed by dealers usually. I think 1968 was the last year they were available for GM. It sounds awesome.

A three gang set by Autometer shows Alt Oil pressure & Temperature and work perfectly. Winning bidder will get a Vintage Sun Super Tach & harness that goes with the car.

Engine Bay

Rust free and mostly factory looking and complete with chromed accessories just needed cleaning up & detailing. No wiring messes no fluid leaks. Inner fenders sanded and re- painted hoses and belts replaced as necessary. Engine was painted new factory style BB valve covers air cleaner pcv elbow & hose etc. new plugs and Red Taylor wires added. MSD ignition system. New Hood insulation will be installed before delivery.

Mechanical- Recent Repairs

Mechanically a sound car with a very powerful engine and smooth shifting 4 speed but it was stored a very long time so some repairs were needed.

Power steering leaked so that was fixed. The A/C unit was missing a lot of parts under the dash as well as under the hood. A lot was spent on completing the system and making it operate. Flushing it all then it was charged and leak tested and blows strong and cold.

We installed a new Power Booster and CPP master cylinder and since one of the 4 piston front calipers leaked repaired/ replaced those and had the system power bled. Plenty of stopping power now although of course the Comp cam lope is big enough that it does deplete the vacuum level at idle. Also replaced the fuel sending unit.

Amazingly No leaks from rear end rear brake cylinders radiator transmission or the engine. Valve cover gaskets were replaced when the new valve covers were installed.

As for mileage on the rebuild the prior Arizona owner said that after the CA owner had all that work done on the motor he then primed it and parked it for years never getting to the cosmetic restoration he planned. In fact he said the break-in oil was still in the motor before he changed it and added Zinc additive. Compression is high enough to require 91 or better octane.

Glass/Windshield

Front Windshield was already replaced with a Pilkington soft ray match and it is chip free uncracked and clear.

Original Factory tinted Side windows roll up and down fine not scratched up might have a couple short tiny scratches. Rear window is the LOF original and has a few scratches at the molding but uncracked and does not affect visibility.

Wheels & Tires/Suspension

Suspension is factory w/ Air shocks in rear. There is what I think is a F41 rear sway bar

which is not factory for an El Camino. Rides really well without suspension

noises or squeaking or undercarriage rattles.

Wheels are brand new 17" American Racing Torque Thrust Ms & Lug kit wrapped

in Brand new 235 Falkan low profiles.

Undercarriage

Awesome Un-detailed dry undercarriage. This is just the way I like to see them. No overs prayed cover ups or POR (paint over Rust. )Dusty with surface dirt but DRY DRY DRY. Bed underside isgood Floor pans good frame is good Rockers shock towers Core Support all solid. ask for more pictures if you like. Before the Dynamat was installed I re-sealed the drain plugs with factory color seam sealer. It looks white with the flash. There is somefactory undercoating that is peeling offin the pictures it is not rust. No frame damage.

Rear End is Positraction and seems to be a performance axle. Id only be guessing

but maybe 370 or 410?

OK....So how does it DRIVE???????

It drives super!! The more I drive it the more I love it.

Engine starts immediately accelerates rapidly and effortlessly idles easily. Not a trace of smoke. Drives arrow straight at highor low speed no pulling no front end noises no rear end noises no brake noises and virtually rattle-free. (something in glove box rattles over rock bumps up here) Oil pressure is great and so far it has not overheated when its 95 degrees outside. . It's not 115 degrees here yet. It has the heavy duty big block radiator but out here in AZ we like 4 core aluminum radiators with a puller fan.. Power Disc brakes Power Steering & Positraction are all MUST HAVES on this beastie not to mention Air Conditioning.

Wipers headlights fuel gauge turn signals speedo a/c htr controls all work good. Horn is wired but inop.

AM/FM push button Radio sounds great and despite a seriously rumpity rump motor with dual flowmasters and a lot of moving accessory belts its pretty quiet in the cab. (Dynamat!)

Stops good clutch works great and shifts easily and smoothly with no apparent synchro issues and shifter is not shaking all around like some do. That big El Camino frame is perfect for handling all that power & Torque. An El Camino's weight distribution is excellent with 56.1% over front tires as compared to Chevelle Coupe at 56.5%. Not overly light in the rear as I once thought!

So why selling?

I have two other cars in restoration. One is a rotissarie Z10 Camaro I wish I

had never started. Its making me broke! I decided it was best to sell the Elky while it

is a fresh restoration and before the other two are done and have to go in the garage.
