Anticipating a general improvement in the market for cars priced and sized below regular models, Chevrolet introduced it's all-new Chevelle, a car that fit between the compact Chevy II and full size models, and was soon being called a "senior compact". Assembly was quartered at plants in Baltimore and Kansas City and a brand new factory in Fremont, California. The car was styled with square looking lines in the Chevy II model, but curved side window glass and an emphasis on width provided a distinctive look. Eleven models were available in two basic lines called Chevelle 300 and Chevelle Malibu, with a convertible as an exclusive upper level offering. Base editions lacked bodyside moldings. Malibu models had a full length strip of bright metal along the lower beltline, with an insert at the rear and Malibu rear fender script. A Super Sport option was released and cars so-equipped had no lower belt trim. Instead, there was a molding running along the full length of the upper body ridge and continuing along the rear fender edge, plus SS rear fender and rear panel badges and specifically styled wheel covers. Bucket front seats were popular features in the Chevelle Malibu Super Sport.
Vehicle numbers were on the left front body hinge pillar. Engine numbers, for both engines, were on the right side of the block to the rear of the distributor. The first VIN symbol was a '4' indicating the 1964 model year. This was followed by four symbols shown in charts below as Model numbers. The first pair of symbols in these Model Numbers indicate the series (53=Chevelle six-cylinder; 54= Chevelle V-8; 55= Malibu six-cylinder; 56= Malibu V-8; 57= Malibu SS six-cylinder; 58= Malibu SS V-8) and the second pair of symbols in the Model Number indicated body style. The next letter (sixth symbol from VIN) shows the assembly plant code with Chevelle production limited to factories coded B (Baltimore); K (Kansas City); and Z (Fremont, California) The last six numbers were the sequential production code starting with 100001 at each plant. A Fisher Body Style plate is under the hood on the left and gives Style Number, Body Number, Trim Code and Paint Code.
