The C4 Corvette ZR-1 unique history:
In the late 80’s GM approachedLotus, the UK based engineering consulting and performance car manufacturing firm with the idea of developing the world's fastest production car, Code Named: “King of the Hill”. With input from GM, Lotus designed a new engine dubbed the LT5, an aluminum-block V-8 with the same bore centers as the standard L98, but with four overhead camshafts and 32 valves. Lotus also designed a unique air management system for the engine to provide a widerpower bandby shutting off 8 of the 16 intake runners and fuel injectors when the engine was at part-throttle, while still giving the ZR-1 375hp when atwide open throttle. In addition to the engine, Lotus helped GM design theupgraded braking and steering systems as well aspicked the settings for the "FX3" adjustable active ride controlhelping to ensure the vehicles capability on the track.
GM found that the engine required special assembly, and that neither the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky nor any of their normal production facilities could handle soMercury Marinecorporation ofStillwater, Oklahomawas contracted to assemble the engines and ship them to the Corvette factory in Bowling Green where the ZR-1s were being assembled. The vehicle went on sale in 1990 and was available only as a coupe. It was distinguishable from other Corvette coupes by its wider tail section, 11" wide rear wheels and its new convex rear fascia with four square shaped taillights. The ZR-1 displayed stunning ability both in terms of acceleration and handling capabilities, but carried with it an astonishingly high price.MSRPfor the (375hp) ZR-1 in 1990 was $58,995,almost twice the cost of a (250hp) non-ZR-1, some dealers successfully marked units as high as $100,000. To this day the C4 ZR-1 remains the only Dual Overhead 4 Cam engine to ever reside under the hood of a Corvette. The engines have proven to be virtually built proof with many owners racking up 100,000 miles before rebuild.
This rare example is 1 of only 16 built in Turquoise metallic for the inaugural model year and was equipped with all factory options including California Emissions so the car can be sold and driven in CA. It is fresh out of a private collection, maintained in a climate controlled garage, has only 3500 actual miles and still retains that new Corvette smell. Most collectors understand that the first year and last year of a special car run are the two most collectible and valuable, as proven at collector car auctions and valuation tools such as Hagerty where they list the 1990 ZR-1 top value at $46,800 compared to $43,100 for a 1991 ZR-1.
