Chevrolet Corvette 1968 Description

This is a rare opportunity for the C3 Corvette enthusiast. 1968 Corvette L71 Convertible. Three owners, and current owner has had the car since 1983. 24,604 original miles documented by title history and previous owners’ signed statements. All components on the car are believed to be factory original, with the exception of tires, brakes, master cylinder, battery, fluids, air filter, two belts, and accelerator rod. April 6,1968 scheduled build date. Always adult owned. Always properly stored and maintained. Original docs include Protect-O-Plate, and original owner’s package from Bernard Chevy-Olds Inc., Libertyville, IL. Dealership is still open, doing business as Libertyville Chevrolet Inc. Very rare color combination- Corvette Bronze with Tobacco vinyl interior. Both tops. Runs and drives as well as it looks. 427/435 HP Tri Power engine. Muncie M21 four speed transmission. Only 2,898 total 435 HP Vettes were manufactured in 1968. If you narrow the criteria down for convertible model, color, interior color, and four speed, the numbers for this particular car would be a fraction of that.

The C2 Corvette platform was causing GM executives some serious concern. The auto maker was entering an era in which gas prices were beginning to skyrocket. Insurance premiums for the performance cars were taking a drastic upswing. Spiraling inflation was also affecting household income. In addition, the C2 platform seemed to be falling out of favor. Sales dipped from 27,720 in 1966 to 22,940 in 1967.

GM needed a new Corvette, and they were on a tighter budget. The development of the C2 Sting Ray cost them a fortune. After only four years of production, they were not going to repeat that investment. Instead, they gambled on the original C2 team to develop the C3 at a cost that was acceptable. Bill Mitchell, Zora Arkus-Duntov, and Larry Shinoda had also developed the Mako Shark II prototype. This prototype was sent to Harry Haga’s studio at Chevrolet Styling under David Holls. The C3 exterior and interior was completely redesigned, reflecting the Mako Shark II. To save money, the body was adapted to a slightly modified C2 chassis platform, with the independent suspension and four wheel disc brakes.

The new Corvette was a success. Sales totaled 28,566 in 1968. In addition, the 15 year run of the C3 design, from 1968-1982, was the longest tenure of any generation of Corvette.
