Chevrolet Chevelle 1970 Description
Save your E-mails, we know Chevy wasn't offering a small-block-powered SS in 1970, but this gorgeous Cranberry Red hardtop looks so good and runs so well, we don't think a few cubic inches will stop you from falling in love. It's got plenty of power, the right look, and bulletproof reliability, so who can blame a guy for loving the SS look?Giving a Chevelle an SS makeover isn't a new fad, but when you have one of the most attractive, popular, and downright nasty cars of the period, people tend to respect it. So when the time came for a restoration, they decided to go all-out and give this car a high-quality respray that would emulate one of Chevy's most potent machines. Finished in a few years ago, the straight bodywork is a tribute to the long hours it takes to achieve this kind of quality, and the glossy paint only serves to emphasize how nicely finished it really is. Black SS stripes on a cowl induction hood are a big part of the appeal of the SS model, so they were, of course, included, as well as the blacked-out SS grille, which only helps to cement the illusion. There are a few signs of use, but nothing that should make you hesitate to take it out on Saturday night looking for some fun. Nice chrome bumpers, polished stainless fender trim, and proper emblems all add up to a car that looks right, authentic or not.The splendid red interior is a fantastic change of past from the usual basic black, and who cares if it has a bench? That's cool! Newer seat covers look crisply detailed and feel supportive when you slide inside, and you'll probably find that you feel right at home the minute you turn the key. The two-spoke steering wheel frames a non-SS instrument panel, perhaps the biggest giveaway that this car isn't legit, but on the other hand, the gauges are in good condition and there are functional auxiliary gauges hanging under the dash. The list of features includes factory A/C that's fully functional and components like the door panels, dash pad, and carpets are in excellent condition. A factory AM radio is still in the dash, so you know the guy who built it had his priorities in order. The trunk carries a proper mat and a full-sized spare tire with jack assembly. The 400 cubic inch V8 under the hood is plenty potent, putting big block size in a small block package. Built by Edwards Motor group, it's got a decent cam inside that gives it a performance lope, a big Holley 750 CFM double pumper carburetor, MSD ignition, and a ProComp intake manifold, all adding up to some pretty serious blasting powder. Detailed with a chrome air cleaner, sand-cast valve covers, and a few chrome dress-up pieces, it looks great yet packs enough punch to be a formidable performer in its own right. Backed by a slick-shifting TH350 3-speed automatic transmission with a high-stall torque converter and a 10-bolt rear end, it's an easy cruiser that makes cross-country drives feel effortless. Long-tube headers and a new dual exhaust system sounds right without being too aggressive, and it really is a clean car underneath. Much of the front suspension is all new as well including the upper and lower control arms, tie rods, idler arm, disc brakes which are slotted and drilled and rear track bars. Gorgeous 17-inch Torque Thrust look awesome and carry 245/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear performance radials that look almost new. With plenty of performance on tap, you probably won't miss the extra cubes and it helps make this a very affordable way to get the Chevelle you've always dreamed of.
