Camaro fans, if you were to build an early F-body that keeps the spirit of the original alive while adding a few show-worthy tricks, wouldn't it look something like this incredible 1967 Camaro hardtop? A fresh build whose paint is barely dry, it packs a thumping LS1 V8, a nicely finished interior, and a slick look that will get it a ton of attention at shows.
Giving an early car slick high-tech colors like the Sonic Blue on this Camaro means that you don't need huge body mods to make an impact. Finished in March of 2016 and showing only five miles (yes, five) since then, all the sheetmetal is still the way GM intended, with nothing to detract from the ultra-smooth shape. A cowl-induction hood and a ducktail spoiler on the deck lid are all factory-issued upgrades that look as good today as they did decades ago, and the stripes neatly combine the Z/28 style and SS style nose ring. That paint job cost nearly $10,000 and uses two-stage urethane paint to give it a brilliant shine, and the stripes were buried under the clear for a look so slick that you're tempted to touch it just to see if it's still wet. Fit and finish are superb, and the car has a stance that seems to emphasize the wedge-shaped profile of the early Camaro, something you rarely notice on stock F-bodies. A few chrome bits like the front and rear bumpers offer some contrast to the otherwise monochromatic body and SS badges fore and aft add a traditional performance warning for the unwary, and all the correct RS equipment is still in place.
Chevrolet stylists nailed it with the first-gen Camaro's interior, but a few tweaks take it to the next level. Most the interior is restored to stock specs, but the handsome bucket seats and door panels are covered in custom blue leather that matches the bodywork. There's also a center console, and the deeply-set gauges in their own individual pods ahead of the driver are now Dakota Digital units that glow from within when you turn the key. A Grant steering wheel adds some sparkle to the driver's environment and it hangs on a custom tilt steering column. The A/C was upgraded during the build and uses the factory controls so it looks right and there's a discreet AM/FM/iPod stereo with speakers neatly stashed throughout the well-insulated interior. You can also get a feel for the quality of the build by looking in the trunk, which is fully finished and upholstered, not just painted with a repro mat thrown in. Someone really cared about getting the details right on this car.
The engine is an all-aluminum LS1 V8, which fits easily and is easy to recognize with its Corvette coil covers (painted to match the bodywork). Beautifully finished in every way, from the smoothed and painted firewall an inner fenders to the careful choice of colors and materials, the engine bay is the highlight of this car. Of course, it also runs superbly thanks to OEM-levels of hardware and software, and the LS1's horsepower and durability are the stuff of legends. There's a big aluminum radiator, a chrome master cylinder, and a custom intake that inhales cold air from behind the headlights. Backed by a rebuilt 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission, a stout 12-bolt rear end, and 4-wheel disc brakes, this one is definitely a runner. Long-tube headers and a new Flowmaster exhaust system give it an awesome rumble and a bunch of new suspension components mean that it handles well, too. Staggered Torque Thrust wheels give it a period performance look and carry 215/60/16 front and 235/50/17 rear performance radials.
