Dodge Polara 1964 Description
PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR 176 DETAILED PICTURES OF THIS CAR!I have a 1964 Dodge Polara convertible for sale. This is a running, driving, unrestored project car that has a lot going for it, including a brand-new top. It does need some more work, but it presents well overall and is ready for a new owner to finish and enjoy... just in time for spring.
The car is 98% complete and mostly original. This is a dry Colorado vehicle overall, but does have some isolated rust in places, which is discussed below. Appears to have had one repaint in its life. 318ci Polyspheric V8 with pushbutton transmission. Power steering.
This car had been sitting for a very, very long time and was non-operational when I acquired it some time last year. Since then, I've done a lot to this car to bring it new life. It may not be ready for a cross-country trip just yet, but it's been a lot of fun to drive around the neighborhood.
Here's what has been done:
Brakes: I replaced the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes and rubber brake hoses; the brakes now function very well.
Engine: The engine did not need much; I just replaced the plug wires and plugs, and the engine purrs like a kitten - without smoke - once warmed up. It's responsive and has plenty of power.
Starter and Battery: Both brand new. Starter is a late-model Nippondenso style.
Transmission: All it needed was the fluid topped off; it shifts firmly. Leaks a few drops a day when sitting.
Tires and wheels: Correct 14x5" factory steel wheels were blasted and painted, then shod with four brand-new 215/75R14 radial tires. I added the correct dog-dish covers but will include original full-wheel covers as well.
Fuel Tank: Dropped and thoroughly flushed. Sending unit replaced with used functioning replacement.
Convertible Top: Several damaged linkages were straightened and/or professionally repaired. Pump motor was rebuilt, and pump isolators replaced. Both lift cylinders replaced. Top received all new fabric - professionally installed - and was finished off with a fresh Steele weatherstripping kit.
Interior: I installed a new ACC molded carpet and a trunk mat to clean things up a bit, but overall the interior is showing every bit of its 52 years of age, and will need to be addressed. A full set of correct '64 seat cores were located for the car, but they will need to be recovered. Rear seats are down to the frames, which will need some repair before recovering. Original door panels are present and will serve as good cores for the trim, but otherwise they are beat. I also tracked down correct original rear 'vert finish panels, but they will need to be patched and painted.
Decklid: I replaced the original decklid with another one I had. The paint is ugly and cracking off this one but it is in much better overall shape than the original. Original will go with the car if the buyer would like.
**********
Bodywise, there is isolated corrosion in many of the usual locations, but this car is not a rust-bucket by any means. There are cosmetic issues, but zero structural rot. The framerails, cowl, inner fenders, rockers, doors, hood, trunk floor and decklid are all either very good or needing only minor attention. The driver's side fender is dented and oddly rusted, and should be replaced - I'm including a decent fender (still needs a little dogleg work) with good trim with the car. The quarters are quite good in front of the wheels and at the wheel lips, but rusted-out behind the wheels. Otherwise, to be rust-free, the car will need some rust repair in the floors, passenger's fender dogleg, lower quarters, and trunk dropoffs. Make sure you look at all 176 pictures thoroughly for the whole story on the body.
All bumpers, trim, scripts, and brightwork are present and in very good or very workable condition. Note the undamaged lower hood moulding - a rare find indeed!
All-original glass present and in good shape, though the windshield is showing its age.
The car goes down the road very straight, quietly, and smoothly with a couple of exceptions: 1) Suspension bushings on the front passenger's side make noise on bigger bumps.. I'm sure they will need replaced at some point. 2) There is a slight whining from the rear end. Not sure if it is a u-joint, the R&P, or a bearing. It's not a loud noise, but it is there. Again, not a difficult fix.
Colorado title is clean, clear, and in my name. This rare and beautiful car deserves to be completed and enjoyed, and is being sold as a running project needing such. Car is for sale locally; listing can be ended at any time. I'm happy to answer any questions about the car and can be reached at 303.941.0272.
