Dodge Challenger 1970 Description

1970 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL R/T CHALLENGER 2 DOOR HARDTOP...

NOT A CLONE OR TRIBUTE... IT'S THE REAL DEAL!

This Challenger was born with the 383 Magnum engine (lost to time) but now has a

professionally (race) built 440 Six Pack with 727 automatic transmission. See more

about the engine and transmission further down please.

I would classify this car as being in a very strong #2 condition. It has not had

a rotisserie restoration but even better it retains most of its original features and

body panels. Partial restoration includes repaint and new "Year One" interior. Those

parts that remain original are in excellent condition. This Challenger is also well documented. See more about original features and non-stock equipment below please.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:

This engine was built by professional Bill Woods known very well by high-end hot rod and custom car builders. Among other very numerous projects Bill has built the engine in the 2006 Detroit Autorama RIDLER AWARD winner before his death in late 2006. I cannot substantiate this engine information except all claims seem plausible and probable from driving the car and what can be visually verified.

440 HP Block (ground and line bored with studs)

505 cubic inch stoker (APPROXIMATELY 550 HORSEPOWER no documentation to substantiate but seems reasonable after pressing the accelerator).

Eagle billet crank and H beam rods

JE flyweight pistons and pins with 11.5 to 1 compression (gotta use about 5 gallons of 110 octane race fuel with each tank for best performance)

Edlebrock Performer aluminum RPM heads

The camshaft is custom ground by Bill Woods with all specs unknown... gone with Bill Competition Cams solid lifter camshaft valves set at .022 intake and .022 exhaust

Comp Cams Max Race roller rockers with Comp Cams rocker shafts and Lunati pushrods

All new Six Pack set up with NOS Six Pack air cleaner

Chrysler performance electronic distributor

Aluminum water pump and housing

Griffin fully polished aluminum radiator

March pulleys

Carter race fuel pump

Coated Hooker Competition headers

Wix Racing oil filter

Original (non-numbers matching) A727B Torqueflite 3-speed SlapStick automatic transmission with a 3000 (Boss Hog) stall converter and aftermarket Mopar Pistol Grip style shifter handle.

Original equipment 3.55 posi in its original 8-3/4" rearend.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW:

The motor in this car creates the most beautiful exhaust note and epitomizes the muscle car sound and performance!!

The AM 8-track Stereo is original to the car serviced years ago and works but has issues.

The car features the cool "Rim Blow" three spoke steering wheel... an original option on the car!

Tires are very new BF Goodrich brand tires.

The car is tight and handles very good (for a 45 year old car)!

While the heater works the heater/AC fan does not work. Also the heater cable is broken (fairly easy replacement).

This is an AC car however the compressor is missing.

The emergency brake cable is broken and needs replacement.

All the original speakers (3 in-dash and 2 on rear package tray) appear to be original and work.

The dash pad is the more rare THREE SPEAKER DASH! Original to the car no cracks and inexcellent condition!

The console is original. It has some minor blemishes and a small crack by the shifter.

The cigar lighter is missing.

All gauge lights and interior lights work.

The spare tire is missing however the jack is still with the car.

No rust on the car. Body work was beautifully done before the repaint and new vinyl roof.

Trunk floor was replaced and the entire trunk compartment is in excellent like-new condition.

The front right fender has a very small scratch about 1" long on top and the corner next to the

window cowl is bent upwards very slightly; otherwise The body and paint are EXCELLENT!

All trim on the car is in very good original condition but may have an occasional nick or ding.

The "go-wing" is not original to the car however the trunk lid is an original 1970 wing decklid

with correct 36" bracket spacing.

The flip-top gas cap was not original to the car but is an original piece and not a reproduction.

Listed in the Chrysler Registry (but I do not have this documentation)

Front shocks are "standard" rear has air shocks (not original).

Shifter handle is an aftermarket with cool Mopar 4-speed pistol grip styling.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS

The lowest verifiable production option on this car is the drivetrain combination of 383 4V/A-727/3.55 Axle (due to the rarity of the A36 axle package) making it 2.7% of total JS23 production or about 1 of 369 R/T hardtops.

Factor in the FJ5 Sublime HI IMPACT paint (which was about 6.7% of total JS23 production or about 1 of 916 R/T hardtops) with that drivetrain combination production option percentage drops even lower.

Other unusual features of this Challenger are it's early production date of September 1969 and the Y17 Chrysler Executive Lease Program code are uncommon.

This car was photographed for an ad campaign for Purolator Oil Filters (see photo included) however the ad never appeared in any publications.
