"The Chrysler E-bodies (the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth Barracuda) might have been the last to enter Detroit’s pony car game. Using a formula similar to Ford and Chevrolet, the Challenger was based on a stretched, compact Dart platform, making the car an immediate sales success. The Challenger, new for 1970, received only minor changes for 1971. A Challenger convertible was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500. It was the last time Dodge built a factory convertible, until the mid-1980s."

For sale by owner is this beautiful 1971 Dodge Challenger convertible. A body off restoration was started in 2012, completed in 2014 and it has been driven less than 200 miles since. It appears to have been professionally done with extensive mechanical and cosmetic improvements. We don't know all the details of the restoration, what follows is what we do know. The car started life as a basic Tan Challenger with a 318 engine and automatic transmission The original (318) engine is long gone and has been replaced with a period correct, rebuilt 340 V-8 with the six pack added at the same time. The transmission is a 904 3-speed automatic with the Slap Stick shifter. It has power steering, power front disc brakes, posi-traction and a 355 gear. Factory spec air conditioning was also added during the restoration. The body was repainted Plum Crazy base coat clear coat, the bumpers were rechromed and the undercarriage was redone as new. The interior was redone in white with new seats, carpeting, door panels etc. All the lights, signals, gages, horn, heat, a/c, wipers, windows and radio are fully operational.
