Dodge Other 1978 Description
1978 Dodge Aspen
I purchased this car as a “basket case” in the spring and I started putting it together. The previous owner had stripped a lot of the car.I put the components necessary to drag race back in the car.I have some of the spare parts that will go with the car.The motor and transmission were built in 2003 and never fired.I added a few parts to it and got the engine running.I broke in the Cam the proper way with ZDDP and cam lube. The transmission is a full manual reverse pattern 727.The rear end is 8 ¾ and I put in 3.91 gears and an Auburn Pro Posi. The gas tank has been removed and I installed a 12 gallon Summit Fuel Cell.
The car does have some rust spots. There is a rust spot in the passenger side floor pan – I pop riveted sheet metal over it and sealed it.The frame on the car is excellent. The passenger seat has not been installed. The interior is pretty nice for an older car. There is a gap in the front grille.
I have taken the car to a 1/8th mile track a couple of times and have made 14 passes. The best time so far is 8.59 at 82.35 MPH.(I have time slips if you want to see!)The car went very straight and stopped perfectly. This car is nowhere near as fast as it could be, I wouldn’t be afraid if it ran 100 MPH in the 1/8th. After testing I have noticed that the torque converter is stock, as opposed to a 2800 stall like I was told. Also, the shifter is on the column which makes it hard to shift; it needs a slap or ratchet shifter on the floor.
I have around $6500 dollars invested in this car, I have a stack of receipts. This is a good project for someone who wants to get into racing cheap. With a little more money, I think it could get into the sevens. The reason I am selling this car is because I recently purchased a 1968 Dodge Dart project car that I have always wanted.
The car is non-streetable, but could be made street legal because it has working headlights and taillights. Most of the electrical does not work, only the gauge that I installed. The alternator also has issues, it probably needs an upgrade. I have a clear Indiana title in my name.
