Ford Thunderbird 1965 Description

This auction is for a 1965 Ford Thunderbird two-door coupe equipped with a 390 cu in V8 and automatic transmission in polar white with red vinyl interior. It is optioned with factory air conditioning, power disc brakes, power steering, power seats, power antenna, vacuum door locks, power windows, rear seat speaker, am/fm radio, studiosonic stereo system and much, much more. It has been painstakingly restored to original condition with no detail overlooked. Although an older restoration, this beautiful car received a complete refurbishment from top to bottom, which took 12 years to finish. All parts were disassembled, sandblasted and painted the correct color including chassis parts, fender aprons and engine components. The valve covers and the air cleaner are painted the correct Cartesian gold color. The engine compartment was completely detailed. The hood hinges, hood release and spring & dowel were re-plated in the original gold dichromium finish. The original 390 cu in V8 engine was professionally rebuilt, and has approximately 30,000 miles on it since the work was done. When the engine was removed from the chassis, the entire engine compartment was media blasted and painted to match the body color. Many new or rebuilt engine/chassis components were installed, including nos exhaust manifolds, a new air conditioning compressor, ac clutch, expansion valve, heater valve, and rebuilt power steering pump and steering gearbox. The carburetor was rebuilt to oem specs. The water pump is rebuilt with new script hoses and clamps. The alternator and the distributor are also rebuilt. The starter motor is a new remanufactured unit. A new fuel pump is installed. The original Cruise-O-Matic C-6 transmission was removed and rebuilt. The ball joints have been replaced. All suspension bearings, seals and pads have been replaced, including rear axle to leaf spring pads. The steering column was removed from the car, and all seals, bushing and bearings were replaced to enhance the sliding steering wheel operation, and safety of the locking mechanism. The muffler and exhaust system are brand new. The brake lines, master cylinder, wheel cylinders and brake shoes are new. The power brake booster is a remanufactured unit. The brake rotors have been cut, and the calipers have been rebuilt using new pads. The shock absorbers are brand new all around. The fuel tank is a Bob Drake reproduction. The fuel line and fittings were replaced. The radiator was removed and serviced by a radiator specialist. The headlight bulbs are original style, sealed beams with the alignment tabs. The battery is new. All new 215 x 75 x R15 B F Goodrich Lifesaver A/W 1 1/2” wide white wall radial tires are fitted all the way around, including the spare.
The body panels are laser straight with specially selected front fenders, hood and deck lid. Anything that was rusted or pitted was cut out and new metal was installed, including the left and right lower rear quarter panels. The body was painstakingly prepared and painted a late model Ford polar white color in acrylic enamel and color sanded to a beautiful finish. All door, vent window and front and rear windshield rubber moldings and seals were replaced, as well as all window cat whiskers. The vent window assemblies, roof belt moldings, rear window vent assembly and other trim pieces are “California chrome” rust free parts. The front and rear bumpers, grille components, hood ornament, roof sail panel ornaments, front turn signals, rear side mirror, door handles and buttons, headlight bezels, wiper bezels, front fender ornaments and trunk lock cover are triple chrome plated. The backup light bezels, rear taillight surrounds and lens are nos. All stainless steel moldings and trim were polished to a brilliant luster. There are a few small paint imperfections on the hood.
The interior seats were re-upholstered in red vinyl using an upholstery kit from Larry‘s Thunderbird Parts, which duplicates the original material and interior style. A white headliner was also installed. The dashboard panel, door panels, package tray, console and other interior parts were disassembled and refinished using a Dupont red dye that matched the original Ford color. A new red carpet and nos rubber floor mats have been installed as per original, as well as new reproduction scuff plates. The interior is adorned with new door handles, cranks and molding screws as well as nos sail panel interior light assemblies. The console trim and other instrument panel parts have all been triple chrome plated. The clock is in working condition. The power window switches and housing plate are in new condition.
The original am/fm radio has been fully restored. The radio knobs have been re-plated. An original Ford rear speaker is mounted on the rear package tray. A rare, Ford accessory studiosonic stereo system (reverberator) has been installed in the trunk compartment with switch and wiring at the dash panel. The cover of the reverb was re-plated with a new cadmium finish.
The car is equipped with the following dealer installed accessories: vacuum trunk release; am/fm radio, rear package tray speaker, vacuum door locks, power windows, power antenna, deluxe spinner wheel covers, tinted glass, power seats, engine compartment light (not attached), non-glare mirror; vanity mirror, fender skirts, and the rare studiosonic stereo system. The trunk compartment is also equipped with an original bumper jack, base and handle in restored condition. The floor area, side walls, wheelhousings and spare tire have been recovered in a reproduction vinyl covered matt/covering. The truck hinge assembly has been replaced with a lightly used part, and the entire trunk was repainted to match the body color.
