Marketed as a “personal luxury car,” the first generation Thunderbird was Ford’s response to the sports car like Corvette. Unlike the Corvette, he T-Bird focused on creature comforts and 1950’s style and flair.
This 1956 example is the second year for the Thunderbird. There were only a few notable changes such as relocating the spare tire to the rear bumper, ide wind deflectors, nd a 12 volt ignition system.Power and torque also increased in 1956 thanks to a Mercury derived 312 V8.

This Thunderbird drives like a dream. It’s soft and comforting like you would expect from any 1950’s luxury car. There is plenty of power at any speed from the 312 and the 3 speed manual transmissionwith shifter on the floor, rare combination. This combination makes for a fun driving experience.

The 1956 T-Bird looks at home on the Hollywood strip or in West Palm Beach. When it was new it was an instant classic because it was oozing style, haracter, nd personality. In 1956, f you drove a T-Bird you were somebody important. Which is why Frank Sinatra, lvis Presley, ennis Wilson (The Beach Boys), ing Cosby, ucille Ball, arilyn Monroe, ohn Travolta and many more have owned Thunderbirds. A similar ‘56 Thunderbird was also chosen to star in George Lucas’s legendary Hot Rod movie American Graffiti.
