Ford Mustang 1969 Description
1969 Mustang 429BOSS 429 day 2 Hot Rod built to represent what Ford should have built back in 1969. This Mustang was assembled using vintage performance components with common sense modern enhancements for performance and reliability. A D1VE 429 "385" series big block was used to give credibility to the BOSS 429 badge and Toploader 4-speed was mandatory to retain the factory type feel of what Ford intended. I wanted a real vintage feel so Z-bar clutch control was fabricated using Ford parts. Not trying to build a fully optioned BOSS 429 tribute, I opted for a stripped down look similar to Fords Super Stock drag cars of the day. You could add the front spoiler, high back buckets, wood dash and fully replicate the "stock BOSS" look but thats not whet I wanted. Real Z-Code Boss 429's are ultra rare and expensive. You will probably never see one driven to the local malt shop or burger joint.
Body:The paint, bodywork was completed by the previous owner. Very nice driver to local show quality work. I would rate it higher but I drive the car and it has been 5 years since completed so if you scour the body, perhaps theres a minor flaw here or there. No rust to the body or chassis-unibody evident. Solid floors and chassis. Originally Indian Fire Red, the car IS NOW Burgundy with all trim removed to complete the Boss look. 429 Type fiberglass hood scoop was bolted to the factory hood and BOSS429 Decals were added.
Engine: Ford 429 Rebuilt with less than 700 miles.Rebuilt with .030 over forged TRW pistons, Clevite 77 bearings. and a Melling HV oil pump. Valve activation is provided by a Comps 275 DEH cam master kit, double roller timing chain and matching magnum lifters. The heads were ported on the exhaust side and fitted with the proper Comps valve springs, locks, keepers and guide plates for the aggressive cam. Comps Magnum roller rocker arms were employed to reduce friction. Edelbrock RPM intake with Holley 600 cfm performance carburetor top the plant. Pertronix Billet Distributor with ignitor III light the fire. Exhaust is handled by custom 1 5/8 headers, 2 1/2 dual exhaust tubing and THRUSH Stainless Mufflers.
Holman Moody Vintage Oil Filter relocation and external oil cooler replicate the DRAG PACK type Ford used. Griffin aluminum radiator, dual summit 1200cfm fans controlled by variable speed Flex-a-Lite controller handle the cooling duties.
Transmission/Driveline: All rebuilt with less than 700 miles.Transmission is a vintage BOSS type RUG-AZ Big Input Toploader that was fully rebuilt. All new or reconditioned internals as required. Centerforce dual friction clutch & pressure plate, Hays flywheel, Hurst Shifter and linkage, new custom driveshaft with hd universal joints.
The rolling stock was chosen to replicate the bare bones link of Fords Super Stock cars. Rear Wheels and tires: 15x7 Steel with 275x60x15 Pro Trac tires. Front Wheels and tires: 15x6.5 Steel with 215x70x15 Pro Trac tires.
Rear Axle: A Ford 9 inch rear with 4 pinion Ford Traction Loc 3.50 gears, 31 spline Motive axles. All rebuilt with new bearings, seals etc.
Interior: Nice blend of original materials with replaced wear items as needed. Very good condition.Seat upholstery is original with minor wear and patina. Drivers seat has some stitching pull at the top left. New carpet, dash cover, headliner and console. This is a fixed rear seat car which saves some weight like the original BOSS Mustangs. Vintage Sun Oil Pressure and Temp gauges installed in the console. A new reproduction of the vintage 1969 Sun Supertach is attached to the column.
Needs: The car does need the gear for the speedometer replaced (only gauge that does not work). If you plan to really race, I would suggest sub frame connectors to prevent the powerful 429 from twisting up this fine car. If you drive responsibly, its not needed...just saying.
Overall, this is a nice solid Mustang that was built with a purpose and plan. I planned to install sub frame connectors and traction device but have not had the opportunity yet. I have owned 428 R-code Mustangs, Big Block Fairlane, Torino Cobras and a 68'GT500 and this car runs with them and cots 10000's less. A REAL BOSS 429 is over 300K. And who actually drives them?
