Ford Other 1950 Description
It started 20 years ago as a very straight, 2 door sedan. I wanted a cool looking, traditional style custom, that was a reliable driver, maintaining a period look throughout. I searched swap meets and ebay for years to find just the right vintage parts for this baby. The car was featured in CAR KULTURE DELUXE magazine, along with a profile on me and my art. It has been in numerous 'Pinup Girl' photo shoots. It is currently featured in an article titled "Hollywood Dreaming", in VOGUE TAIWAN magazine. There are so many details and features to list. Here goes...The car was initially built by 'Merc John' Van Jeer of Riverside California. Bruns Custom City and Sunbelt Customs, also contributed to the build over the years. The top was chopped, 6" and a, Dick Dean, fiberglass 'Carson Style' top with a glass back window, was fitted, padded and upholstered. It fits perfectly and gives the car a beautiful flowing profile. The headliner is black vinyl with white tuck and roll inserts, and matches the seat upholstery. Tuck and roll, bench seat in front, and a '64 T Bird, 'Cove' seat, in rear, fits perfectly and looks great! The carpet matches- black with white piping. The upholstery has a slightly aged patina, but is in good shape. There are two small rips on the lower back of the driver seat. Not very noticeable. The frame was metal reinforced on both sides at the rear and front of the door openings, and upholstered over. The doors open and close easily with Bear Claw Latches. With no outside door handles, entry is easily accessed by reaching over the door to the inside handle, or through the wing window, when the side glass is up. New rubber molding around doors and trunk. A rebuilt 327 Chevy engine with Corvette Valve Covers was installed. It runs cool and doesn't burn oil. Glass pack exhaust, gives a deep throaty rumble. A 350 Chevy automatic transmission uses the original column shifter. A Mustang 2 style front clip was added, giving the car, power rack and pinion steering, and disc brakes for easy handling and sure stops. More recently, an air bag, with shocks, suspension, was installed. This gives the car ample wheel clearance for steep driveways and tight steering situations. It also drops way down low, for that cool curbside appeal. The Air Compressor and Holding Tank are hidden behind the back seat, in the trunk. Two toggle switches on the air pressure gauge adjust the height, front and rear. Another toggle switch turns on the compressor. Chrome framed side glass and wing vents were custom made. Front windows roll up and down with original hand cranks. Rear windows are curved to flow with the shape of the top. They are 'fixed' and slide into position, attaching to the Carson top with screws. Carson Top is easily set into place and attached with 4 nuts and bolts, front and rear. The car looks great with the top removed, for a full, open car experience. There are a few scuff marks on the paint where the top sits on the body. The car has numerous body modifications: hood corners rounded, door handles shaved, '53 Buick headlights molded in, '53 Chevy grill and surround, was cut down and peaked to fit perfectly. '54 Oldsmobile flared wheel wells, were molded in. Cut down Mercury fiberglass skirts fit perfectly. Sunken radio antenna with a unique, 'musical note' molded in. Custom, domed taillight lenses. The gas filler door was filled in and now accessed through the trunk. The car was repainted about a year ago, by Platinum VIP, with a 'split coat' finish- Black semi-gloss, and flat finish, Chartreuse Green. This color combination was inspired by the '50 Ford Crestliner colors. There are a few surface cracks at the crest of the trunk- only noticeable upon close inspection. The white steering wheel is from a '51 Ford. The stone guards, steering wheel and skirts, feature the Canadian Ford, "Meteor Star', motif. Side trim is '55 Pontiac Star Chief. Tires are 6-70-15 wide white wall, bias ply, Firestones, with the classic 'pie crust' edge. Tread is good. Custom wheel covers are stainless '53 Pontiac, with a center bullet and spinner, added. Nice spare tire included in the trunk. Speedometer/odometer was rebuilt and lights up bright green, matching the domed, Stewart Warner gauges under dash. Center dash features a Gold skull with eyes that light up green, in a vintage DeSoto compass badge. Back seat center has a vintage devil license topper over the arm rest. It was chromed, and has lights behind the red eyes. The Pioneer Blue Tooth stereo, is 'smart phone' compatible, and hidden in the glove box. Operates by remote control. A subwoofer in the trunk and an amplifier under the seat, provide powerful clear sounds. Four chromed, '56 Chrysler speaker grills, with tinsel thread speaker cloth, complete the scene. Beautiful polished Aluminum 'Rocketeer' exhaust tips, compliment the vintage license plate and Chrysler, overrider bar. Front and rear bumpers were re-chromed. Trunk is lifted with a '55 Pontiac star ornament/lift. Horn is honked by an under dash button. Pull chain, sounds the vintage "Hollywood Wolf Whistle". Car is located in Los Angeles, Ca. This is not a perfect show car, but a great looking custom driver, that gets admiring looks and thumbs up, wherever you go. It's been a blast, and if I could afford to keep it, I would.
