MORE ABOUT THIS CAR:

This tough-as-nails Galaxie 500 rolled off theLos Angelesassembly line equipped with the ‘G Code’ Thunderbird 406ci Super High-Performance big block V8 under the hood.

Called the ‘Thunderbird’ 406 due to its 390 roots (though not actually available in a Thunderbird or anything else other than a Galaxie!), his special engine was offered strictly as a homologation special for NHRA Super Stock drag racing, itting back at the 400+ cubic inch offerings from Chevy, opar, ndPontiac. The Thunderbird 406 was offered in two versions, igh Performance and Super High Performance, ith the top spec as seen here boasting 11.4:1 compression, riple Holley 2bbl carburetors breathing in through a high flow oval air cleaner, lus factory headers and dual exiting exhaust system.

Ford rated the Super High Performance version at 405hp with 448lb-ft, nd Motor Trend magazine opined that the experience from behind the wheel delivered, something like Ferrari performance at a fifth of the price."

As might have been expected, he tri power 406 was aimed at none but the most serious drivers. Heavy Duty suspension, eavy Duty brakes and 15-inch wheels were all included with the $488.70 engine package, nd the Borg Warner ‘top loader’ 4-speed manual transmission was a mandatory option ($188), ecause even the top spec Cruise-O-Matic couldn’t handle the torque. Together this amounted to a dramatic 25% increase over the base $2,674 MSRP, lthough some of that expenditure could be seen as savings on the features that Ford simply would NOT allow you to order with the Super High Performance engine option: no Air Conditioning, o deluxe wheel covers, o power steering, o power brakes, o chrome engine bay dress-up kit, o automatic transmission of any variety…and probably no puppies or kittens were allowed on the bench seat either.

This car is presented in correct Oxford Blue over blue interior finished in optional all vinyl trim, nd it is equipped with the optional 4.11 rear end gearing. It is the fifth of just 27 remaining Tudor Club Victorias (hard top coupes) with six barrel 406s known to the ’62 Galaxie Registry, nd only four of those 27 came off the Los Angeles assembly line. The mileage reading of 61,676 is true and actual.
