Ford Thunderbird 1966 Description
Up for bids is my 1966 Ford Thunderbird hardtop. We bought this car a few years ago with a quick flip in mind but I ended up keeping it around for awhile. It needed a transmission paint and front seats. The body was pretty solid with a bit of rust removed and metal replaced in the rear quarters. We sent it to our tranny guys that put in a rebuilt transmission and new coolant lines so the one that is in the car is not the one that the car was born with but it is the correct type. The original 390 engine started right up when we got it and only had a few minor leaks. We replaced the the intake and valve cover gaskets and for the most part just has a few seals with some seepage not so much leaks. While doing this work I put a wrench into the radiator so I sent that to a rad shop for repair. The studs for the manifolds were pretty much all broken so we replaced them all and installed a new exhaust system. It isn't factory and exits from the side. I'd never done this to a car before and I like the way it looks and sounds. The brakes are in good shape and the suspension isn't bad but could use ball joints. I lowered the front end about 2 inches when we installed shocks all around. If you aren't into this look springs for these are cheap and plentiful and can be easily returned to factory height (you can do this not me). We've installed a new voltage regulator and miscellaneous wiring too. We did a cylinder pressure test and all cylinders were about 150lbs +-. Once it was drivable it was sent it to our body guy/paint guy. This is where I wish we'd put a bit more money into the paint. From 5-10 feet it looks very good up close you can see it isn't the best paint job. It isn't terrible by any means but it is a good driver quality respray that you won't freak out over if you get caught out in the rain or drive over some sand in the road. The body was actually in very good condition but needed some metal put in the quarters on both sides. The floors and fenders are solid. The interior was all original and the front seat covers were shot. It has a red leather with an almost pearl effect in it. This material is quite difficult to source and since I wasn't looking to do a concourse restoration on this car I just had a good vinyl installed. The rear seats have some cracking but are still the original seats. The door panels have the typical wearing on the top and I wasn't able to source panels that I felt were worth putting into the car. New reproduction panels are available but they can be pricey. My interior guy says he can fix the panels but they won't have a factory appearance and I chose to leave them alone for the time being. I had new factory style carpets installed as well as a new headliner so the interior is in pretty good shape for the most part. There are a couple of decent sized cracks in the dash but I haven't tried to see if it can be repaired or not. There are replacement dash panels available but again I had the intent of a quick flip when this project was started. Once it was done and ready to drive it was snowing out and that just isn't the time to try to sell a classic. A few months pass by with me looking at it sitting in the shop and the looks grew on me. I started driving it on days where it was nice out and I've had no problems with it. It's a bit cold blooded at start up and I think some adjustments are needed in the carb but otherwise it's a good runner. The tires have good tread thickness but are very cracked due to age. I'd have no fear jumping in this car and driving anywhere if it had new tires on it but since I just cruise around town with it I've left them on. It currently has dog dish hub caps with trim rings but I also have the factory caps. I'd actually love to keep the dog dish caps when this car sells. The trim is all there and the glass is in good shape. The sequential tail lamps work fine as do the power windows and quarter windows. The radio sometimes works but most of the time doesn't.
