Ford Other Pickups 1949 Description

General – Hi there here is one that I started restoration on and then priorities shifted so I want to pass it along to someone who will finish it. It is a 1949 Ford pickup one of the most sought after of the 1940s – 1950s. The best part about this one is it is an F-2 three quarter ton so it can do some work for you. This one would make a great shop truck tow vehicle construction truck toy hauler or use for farm or ranch work. Advertise your business club race team cause or whatever. It is an excellent candidate for total restoration or with minimal work drive as is for work or play. I did some clean up work put in a plywood bed floor patched a few places mostly in the box applied some primer and attended to a few small issues but it has mostly sat in my shop taking up space. The truck has a clear Montana title and it is licensed and in Montana the taxes are paid until May 2016.

I always like to do a little research on the vehicles I purchase and was able to determine that this one spent its first 30 years in western South Dakota in the Lead Deadwood and Sturgis area. It was last licensed in 1979 (the plate is still on the truck see picture) when it was purchased by a gentleman in Billings Montana who drove the truck from South Dakota to Billings where he set it away. That owner passed away and eventually the guy I bought it from bought it from the estate. It is always interesting to see the mechanical inventiveness and sense of humor of the ones who came before such as the person who re-arranged the letters in the F O R D logo on the hood of this one (see pictures); if you don't like this you can switch the two letters back around but I am sure he/she had some fun with it.

Body and exterior - The best part about this truck is it is has an amazingly solid cab inside and out. There is some rust in the truck (see pictures) but it is confined primarily to the box and the fenders. The fenders are repairable. The cab interior and exterior are very solid and the floor and cab corners from what I can see are virtually rust free (see pictures). The pickup box has rust but is serviceable as is. I have a tailgate which is not much but it is for a ¾ ton and I will include it for the buy it now price. I don't think this old truck ever saw farm ranch or construction use for 66 years of experience it has almost no dents or dings or welds or that sort of thing. The glass is all there and only the wing glasses have small cracks. There are two nice serviceable back in the day “west coast mirrors” (see pictures).

The hood and driver’s door open and close properly too date I have not been able to get the right door unlocked. The doors and hood have nice fitment (see pictures) and the hinges are not broken. The running boards which are usually beat up or completely gone on these old trucks are in surprisingly good condition no rust holes (see pictures). The wheels are stock 16 inch and the front two tires should be replaced with more serviceable used tires or new ones.

Mechanical - The engine (I believe) is a 1955 or 1956 Ford 272 cubic inch (see picture) which sounds amazing considering it was not started for some 36 years. If you know your Fords you will note 55 or 56 V8 emblems on the fenders and dash (see pictures). Neither the previous owner nor I dared to run gas through the tank rather he installed a small external gas tank and I was able to actually drive the old truck on to my trailer. That is the extent of movement under it’s own power since I brought it home. My opinion is it like most vintage vehicles will require the fuel tank to be cleaned of old sediments rust and varnish; not much cost just labor. The fuel pump and carburetor seem to function properly. The engine is mated to a four speed and the differential is correct or of the right era. Beyond this description I don’t know much as I have not driven the truck for any distance.

The brakes pedal depresses to the floor so I am sure fluid pressure has been lost in one or more cylinders hoses or lines. I would ask that you check the entire system and adjust or replace as necessary or have your mechanic do that as these old trucks had only a single chamber brake master cylinder and on their best day any leaking hose or blown cylinder anywhere and you were completely out of brakes. I don’t believe the truck was converted to 12 volt; it is still a 6 volt system which is a good thing as most conversions resulted in burned out lights fried wiring ruined gauges and other problems unless it was done by a professional. The truck came to me with no battery but once the buy it now price has been satisfied I will include an almost new 6 volt battery. You will however have to fabricate a battery tray or come up with a back in the day long narrow battery to fit the factory location.

Interior – Amazingly complete (see pictures)! The color of the instrument panel is still very vivid which is a testament that much of the old truck’s life was under cover of some kind. The seat is intact; the cover has only one split but is very brittle; however it could be used as for a while if you need to save money. The truck has an amazing turn signal device. It is a Teleoptic which I had never seen before and my research has turned up very little. It is dash mounted and very unique (see picture). The heater is present as well as all controls (see picture). It has a later model radio which some past owner placed in an ingenious mount and it is done very nicely (see pictures). I believe if you wanted to go back to a stock 1949 radio you could remove his fiberglass frame and install the original. This 66 year old truck even has its original floor mat. I like the back in the day stickers on the dash (see picture) but if you don’t of course you can remove them.

Summary – This old truck is an excellent example of originality and is very complete to include all the garnish trim badges interior knobs gauges etc. For someone with a little mechanical ability this truck can be an everyday driver for work or play or both. It has a lot of potential to carry your business logo tow your toys or whatever and be a lot of fun. It deserves another chance and to be put back on the road and maybe even show up at your local car show or a parade.
