Ford Mustang 1967 Description

The great thing about the Ford Mustang is that it’s everybody’s car. From a humble six-cylinder economy commuter to a rompin’, tompin’, ire-breathin’ muscle car, here was a way to build your ideal Mustang. Today, t’s that exact kind of customization at the factory level that makes them such popular collectors’ items and it’s definitely why some are more valuable than others. This 1967 Mustang convertible is one of those unusual combinations of desirable factory options, reating arguably the most appealing non-Shelby Mustang you can buy. Some of its virtues include an S-code 390, 4-speed manual transmission, actory A/C, nd an awesome black-over-red color combination. Oh, nd there’s also a high-quality older restoration, aking it the ideal car for driving and shows.

According to the Marti Report that accompanies this car, nly 142 Mustangs were built in Raven Black with a red interior, o that by itself would make it a neat find. Of course, he black paint is in excellent condition, aving been restored perhaps 8-10 years ago and properly maintained since then. There are a few signs of use, ut for a car ostensibly born to run, his one has led a pretty cushy existence. It appears that the quarter panels are original to the car and looking underneath, here’s no evidence that this was ever a rusty car, o obviously someone knew it was special from the very start. The doors fit well, he hood opens easily, nd even the trunk sits flush, n area that’s often problematic with vintage Mustangs. Of note, he list of factory-installed options include the Exterior Décor Group, hich included bright trim on the wheel arches, ocker panel moldings, nd the stainless trim surrounding the tail panel. Somewhere along the way it received a set of GT-spec fog lamps in the grille, hich really look fantastic, s well as the red stripes along the rocker panels that are the ideal tie-in to the red interior. It also includes the hood-mounted turn signal indicators, hich are fully functional. If you want a flashy Mustang, ew do it with more class than this convertible.

The Deluxe red interior is the absolute best choice with the Raven Black bodywork—it’s kind of puzzling why only 142 people stepped up and did it right. Obviously the entire interior has been restored, ith new correct seat covers, resh carpets, nd reproduction door panels that are wonderfully detailed with bright polished stainless trim, satin insert, nd ribbed lower moldings. The bucket seats are all-day comfortable and the larger 1967 body style means that the seating position is a bit more upright than the earlier cars, aking them a great choice for real-sized humans. A wood-rimmed steering wheel was part of the Interior Décor Group, nd this one came from the factory with a center console, hich also included the “garage door” storage compartment just under the radio. That radio is the original AM/8-track unit, ut it is sadly no longer operational—not a worry because the engine provides plenty of aural entertainment. The gauges feature bright, lear faces and polished lenses and the brushed stainless instrument panel is in great shape. In 1967, /C became a factory-installed option rather than a dealer add-on, o the under-dash box is gone, eplaced by neatly integrated center air vents and small round vents at the outboard corners. The factory 4-speed is topped by a slick-shifting Hurst shifter and there are heavy-duty rubber floor mats to keep it tidy. Overhead, he manual black convertible top is in good condition, ut needs a bit of tugging to latch properly—we suspect it will be easier when ambient temperatures are not in the 40s. There’s a matching red boot that gives it a clean appearance when the top is stowed and the trunk is outfitted with a correct mat and matching styled steel wheel and tire assembly.

Looking further into the statistics, t appears that Ford only built 940 S-code 4-speed convertibles. Given the big block competition from Chevy, ord had no choice but to stuff the potent 390 cubic inch V8 under the Mustang’s hood. The 335-horsepower mill totally transforms the Mustang, iving it a true Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. It starts easily, dles smoothly, nd has great road manners when driven lightly. But row the Hurst shifter with vigor and stomp the throttle, nd all that torque makes the rear tires squirm, ven in fourth gear, nd this vintage pony is more than a match for a lot of more recent cars. The engine was recently detailed and has numerous upgrades, ncluding a polished Edelbrock intake manifold, big Holley 4-barrel carburetor, nd long-tube headers to really bolster that torque curve. The rest is quite authentic-looking, tarting with Ford Blue engine enamel and those familiar “ Ford” chrome valve covers that first appeared on the Galaxie. The big air cleaner wears reproduction decals and the A/C system uses a factory-style compressor with good old R12 refrigerant inside. You’ll note that the hoses, lamps, nd fasteners are all factory-spec and a new dual-reservoir master cylinder was recently installed. And with that big lump of cast iron over the front wheels, ou’ll be glad for power steering as well, aking this Mustang very easy to handle around town.

Underneath, ou’ll find a correct “Top Loader” 4-speed manual transmission feeding the original 9-inch rear end with 3.00 gears inside, aking this a very user-friendly car for road trips. The floors have been painted correct red oxide and you’ll note original floor pans, ore evidence that this car has never been rusty or wrecked. Critical areas like the torque boxes and rocker panels are in excellent condition as well. A brand new dual exhaust system with Dynomax mufflers and polished tips was installed just a few weeks ago, nd it sounds almost exactly like Steve McQueen’s fastback from “Bullitt” (that is why you love the ’67 Mustang, ight?). There are new shocks at all four corners, giant front sway bar, new gas tank, nd rebuilt brakes, aking this Mustang ready to ride without a second thought. And while it was originally equipped with steel wheels, ub caps, nd whitewalls, e think the addition of 14-inch styled steel wheels and fat 215/70/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials are a big improvement.

Nicely documented with a Marti Report, wner’s manual, nd some receipts, his is a rare, ast, un Mustang in fantastic colors. The great pedigree makes it special and we have to admit that once you’ve driven a big block Mustang, t’s hard to drive anything else. Call today!
