Forty Fords are one of the quintessential American

Hot Rods.

They are without a doubt the favorite choice of America’s Moonshine Runnin’,

Thunder Road Bootleggers as well.

These Good-Old-Boys didn’t want a Chevrolet, uick, adillac, ldsmobile, ontiac, odge, lymouth, hrysler, ackard or Studebaker to hop-up and “Run Shine”.

They wanted a Ford V-8.

These factory fast, turdy, owerful, asily modified and great handling cars made them American favorites from the very beginning.

They became the favorites of early Hot Rodders for the same reasons including their

SUPER COOOOOOOL LOOKS!!!

The Ford designers got everything right on these iconic cars.

If you want to create a realistic

Thunder Road Shine Runner,

This is your car.

You can’t use a shiny restored car because they didn’t look like that !!!

If you just like the Patina Look you can not create the look in a paint shop that nearly 80 years in Nature took to make !!!

So, ow did this car survive to be in this condition nearly 80 years after the guys in the Ford plant tightened the bolts ?

It definitely takes a unique and RARE set of circumstances for this to happen !!!

Perhaps the legend explains it!!!!

Here is the Legend.

Shortly after the end of WWII a retired California couple drove this car to a remote lake resort in the Northern Minnesota Pine Forest to escape the sweltering heat in a pre-air conditioning era little town near San Diego. They found the area of the lake to be lush, reen, ool and breezy….. exactly the opposite of the hot, ry, rown, usty place they were used too.

THEY ALSO FOUND THE 2,500 MILE, RE-INTERSTATE, RE- AIR CONDITIONED CARS TRIP IN AN OLD FORD RATHER GRUELING.

At some point that Summer they decided to make this resort the place they would spend every Summer from then on. They reserved their favorite cabin for the next year and took the train home to avoid a long, ncomfortable drive.

The resort owner graciously let them leave this ’40 Ford in a shed at the resort so they would have a car to drive when they were there for the Summer.

For the next 15 years or so they arrived in Minnesota each May and stayed until the weather turned in October.

The Ford made many trips to see Hank, he owner of the old gas station at the intersection of Loon Lane and Notherway Road. Hank kept it running well for them. Once a week or so they made the “BIG HI-WAY TRIP” (two miles) into town for groceries. Each Fall the Ford was Winterized and tucked away in the shed.

This went on until about 1960 when something happened and the couple never returned. The resort owner left the car in the shed and it became somewhat of a local legend. THE CHERRY OLD ‘40 FORD IN A BARN THAT COULD NOT BE BOUGHT AND THE OLD MAN THAT WOULDN”T LET ANYBODY SEE IT. By the Seventies it was largely forgotten except by a few car guys….HEY, EMEMBER THIS IS A ’40 FORD….true car guys NEVER forget where they are.

The car stayed sleeping in the shed under a beat up wood shingled roof for nearly six decades. Aging like fine wine and becoming more exposed to the elements each year as the building deteriorated.

Time marched on and eventually the resort was passed down to the owner’s grandson who continued to operate the way Grandpa always did as long as he could.

Changing times were against him. The old style family fishing camp resorts are now out of style. Swimming pools, ot tubs and cable TV have replaced the nightly campfires, randpa’s tales, ghost stories and Smores. A couple of years ago the grandson decided he would need to upgrade the resort to stay viable. Some of the old buildings would have to go. The Ford’s shed was one of them. The car was moved outside and he decided it would have to go.

I got wind of the car last year and went to see if it was as nice as it was supposed to be. I found this beautiful car largely the way it is today. I’m a hopeless Car-A-Holic and simply can’t resist stuff like this. I made a deal and brought it home. Just had to have it even though I didn’t need it. You know the feeling. The Legend may be fact or may be fiction….I DON’T CARE because this car is INCREDIBLE !!!

I already have too many cars and two other Forty Fords. I decided to pass this car along to you.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS;

BODY and FLOORS- VERY STRAIGHT AND VERY SOLID. NO BODY WORK EVER !!! No rust holes or bubbles in the Body, VER with the exception of the Tail Pan. The rust in that area of course was factory installed as we all know. No rust in the FLOORS, VER !!! Doors shut with a click. INCREDIBLY NICE BODY !!

PAINT- “TRUE PATINA”. What you see is what is left of the ORIGINAL PAINT….AGED TO PERFECTION. Never touched up or refinished. Door Jambs, nder Hood, he Firewall AND INSIDE UNDER THE FENDERS reveal the shiny Grayish Blue/ Green that the factory guys sprayed on it in 1940. IT TAKES 75 YEARS TO CREATE A FINISH LIKE THIS…..SO COOL !!! People have finally come to appreciate this. THIS CAR WILL ATTRACT MORE ATTENTION THAN THE ONE WITH THE $10,000 PAINT JOB YOU ARE PARKED NEXT TO !!!!

INTERIOR- All ORIGINAL. In looking at the fact that the Driver’s Seat Cushion is not worn out ( Backrest is torn), he Windlaces show little wear, he Arm Rests show little wear, he Door Panels are nice and the Scuff Plates have NO SCUFFS, have come to the conclusion that the mileage on the odometer might be actual. Mice got the Headliner. Original knobs and paint on Dash. Nice ORIGINAL Steering Wheel.

ENGINE and TRANSMISSION- I believe these to be ORIGINAL to the car but I have no way to tell for sure. Nice running Flathead V-8. The Fuel Pump and Water Pumps have been replaced. The Carburetor and Distributor have been rebuilt. Has conversion kit to use a modern style Coil. STARTS INSTANTLY, DLES SMOOTHLY and RUNS GOOD. Manifold Heater is still intact and on the car…..you NEVER see these. THE OEM STYLE SPLIT RADIATOR IS STILL IN THIS CAR ….REMARKABLE. Clutch works smoothly and the transmission shifts well. EXHAUST SYSTEM IS COMPLETE and QUIET. THE WAY THIS CAR STARTS AND RUNS AMAZES EVERYONE WHO SEES IT !!!

GLASS and TRIM- Glass is CLEAR, OT DELAMINATED, O cracks and NO chips. Obviously a result of being kept out of the sun. Driver’s Side Windshield has wiper scratches. Rubbers and seals are ORIGINAL.

GRILL is really NICE and obviously original. Stainless trim is in GREAT condition. Bumpers and Guards are ORIGINAL, traight and have cool patina. Amazing glass and trim.

BRAKES and SUSPENSION- My buddy who is a ’40 Ford expert says the Brake lines are ORIGINAL with FORD SCRIPT BRAKE DRUMS (when was the last time you saw that?) leading him to believe the miles may be actual. Car will need a new Master Cylinder and I recommend a total brake overhaul if you plan on driving it. Steering box feels fine. Car sits level.

WHEELS and TIRES- FORD SCRIPT WHEELS with ORIGINAL Hubcaps and Trim Rings. Tires are ancient but have good tread and hold air. I feel they should be replaced.

OTHER STUFF- I have been hunting and collecting cars since the 1960’s. This is the nicest, ost solid, ost original and most complete ’40 Ford I have found in the last 50 years. They just ain’t out there anymore guys. Yes, his car will still need work to make it drivable but dang they are few and far between.

If I had found this car in 1970, would have had it sanded and painted within a week. In another week I would have yanked the Flattie and put in a small block Chevy. In another week I would have ripped out the interior and replaced it with black, uck and roll vinyl.

NOT ANYMORE….NOW I CAN APPRECIATE THE SPECIAL SET OF EVENTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES IT TAKES FOR A CAR TO SURVIVE INTACT LIKE THIS FOR 80 YEARS. IF I KEEP IT NOW I WILL REPAIR THE SYSTEMS THAT NEED IT, RESERVE EVERYTHING I CAN AS IT IS AND DRIVE IT SPARINGLY.

THIS IS A RARE AND SPECIAL FIND !!!

If you buy it and leave it as/is that is GREAT !

If you buy it and give it a complete restoration you will save thousands of dollars in parts and at least $10,000 to $15,000 on body work and labor that won’t need to be done because of the HIGH QUALITY and COMPLETENESS of this car. That is great too !!

If you buy it and turn it in to a Moonshine Runner Replica that is GREAT too !!!

If you buy it and turn it into a Rod you will make enough off the ORIGINAL parts you can sell to end up with a FREE and SOLID body to start with plus you will save at least $10,000 to $15,000 on body work that won’t need to be done.

That is great too !!!!
