Ford Mustang 1965 Description

This is not just another ‘60s Pony car; it is powered by the now legendary K-Code 289 cubic-inch V8 also known as the High Performance or HiPo Mustang, nd the durable Ford 4-speed Toploader transmission. This Mustang is a classic that was very well-maintained and cared for with only two owners over the past 30 years.

The 1965-1967 “K” cars were the FIRST high performance Mustangs. These were cars that Ford dropped the 289 HiPo engine into. They were special because they were more than a hot engine in a good looking car. These cars came standard with heavy duty suspension, nine-inch rear end, nd many other performance modifications. More often than not, hese HiPo Mustangs were seen driven to work during the week, nd raced on the weekends. This helps explain the rarity and low survival rate of this car today. The original Ford power train warranty on HiPo’s came with was 90 days or 4000 miles, hichever came first. Additionally, he warranty was voided if the vehicle participated in any “competitive activities”. Today, hese cars are not common, nd in some combinations can be quite rare. Convertibles are much rarer than the usual coupe or fastback body style.

What was the difference between a standard 289 c.i. engine and the HiPo 289? It was components! The HiPo incorporates many outstanding features, ermitting maximum performance characteristics while retaining the durability of regular passenger car engines – high compression cylinder heads, uch stronger connecting rods, ompetition style exhaust headers, igh lift camshaft, olid valve lifters, egendary Autolite 4100 carburetor, igher density iron crankshaft, ast aluminum flat top pistons, eefier timing chain, nd a high efficiency air cleaner.

In late 1964, ord asked Carroll Shelby to transform the Mustang into something very special – a car that more people could afford than his Cobras. The Cobra was an impractical car as an everyday driver. So it was the K-code Mustangs with their HiPo engines that Shelby chose to create his legendary Shelby GT350.

VIN # 5F08K687525 carries the engine “K” in its factory numbering. Ford’s vin. # always identified which engine option the car was born with.

Because it’s a K-Code let’s talk about performance: this Mustang’s engine was rebuilt by very reputable local shop in 2012 and has about 1,000 miles on it since then. The rebuilt engine was dyno’ed at: 315 H.P @ 5400 RPM’s and 326 Ft-Lb Torque @ 4300 RPM’s (see Dyno printout). It inhales through its vintage Autolite 4100 four-barrel carb and intake manifold, hile the original distributer was converted to a Pertronix electronic ignition and fires the combustibles within its original iron high-performance cylinder head castings.

Moreover, t sports high flow vintage Tri-Y headers attached to stainless steal exhaust with twin Flowmaster mufflers. The long block is finished in correct black, nd there are stock chromed rocker covers that spice up the engine bay. Best of all, t sports that coveted Ford 9-inch rear end (3.50:1)! It also features the optional Pony interior with console. This kar is not originally a factory GT but the GT options were added during restoration.

This kar was professionally restored in 2007. Put in new Pony interior, arpets and upgraded to GT options. Replaced entire suspension system and all brakes, pgrading to front disks. Replaced all wiring harnesses. All dash instruments replaced. Rally pac installed. Rag top was replaced in 2005 and is in excellent shape as it's hardly used. This kar does not have its original HiPo engine. I purchased a little used HiPo engine which had been transplanted from a HiPo Mustang (VIN 5F07K718013) into a racing boat. Had that engine rebuilt and put into this kar . Cylinders were bored 30 over. Installed Seal Power forged pistons. Installed Comp Cams "289-271 HiPo" cam. Comp Cams 1.460 solid lifter springs. Ferrea stainless 1.5 Ex and 1.84 Int valves. Installed Edlebrock Performer RPM intake. Ford Power Train's Tri-Y headers. Stock Autolite 4100 carb. (restored by Pony Carbs). Increased jet sizes to 54 / 72. Stock distributor (restored by Tim O'Connor) with Pertronix III. Stock HiPo fuel pump.

It is painted correct year factory Rangoon Red (2007) and the body is free of any dents, ings, ust or other issues (exception; there is a stone ding on the front valence – but you cannot see it unless you stoop down low and look under the front bumper). All badging is correct and even the original Am radio works! The upholstery, arpeting, eat belts and other interior trim are in excellent condition.

This Mustang looks great, ounds great, uns great and that’s the joy of owning and driving a real K-Code Mustang convertible. It is also listed in the HiPo Mustang Registry (hipomustang.com).

Total HiPo Mustang production by year:

'64.5/65 - 7,273
'66 - 5,469
'67 - 489

That's 13,231 out of nearly 1.7 million Mustangs produced through the '67 model year.

We’ve owned this Mustang since 2007 as it was a gift to my wife who has always wanted a red, onvertible Mustang. The reason we’re parting with it now is that due to health issues, y wife can no longer drive it.

Ok, t's nice and sunny here today. So I went out to the garage, ooked up the battery, hecked the fluids, djusted the tire pressure, nd fired the K-Code up - first time since its winter slumber. Twisted the key, id not even pump the accelerator, fter a couple of seconds of high test getting up to the Autolite 4100: BOOOM!! She exploded into action. Took her out for a little exercise and some fresh gas. Just lovely!
