Ford Mustang 1970 Description

Boss Trans-Am Inspired 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback

This 1970 Ford Mustang underwent a five-year restoration to turn it into the ultimate muscle car, with emphasis on performance, reliability, clean period looks and capable handling. The enthusiast California builder chose the best components available and professional set-up was done by world-famous Shelby and Cobra shop Maeco Motorsport, whose cars are seen every year in the paddock at Monterey. The car was featured on Top Gear USA and also in a 2012 CarQuest calendar, and features custom touches inspired by tthe Bud Moore Trans-Am cars.

All the right Boss 302 exterior items have been added, but with a few interesting custom twists, using the Trans-Am cars as inspiration. This includes the chin spoiler, rear spoiler, rear window louvers, and custom fresh in 2015 Boss stripes (painted on hood, vinyl on sides) mounted lower on the rocker like the Parnelli and Follmer cars, as opposed to stock location. Brushed nickel finish bumpers and door handles are something different, and 17 X 8” Year One Magnum wheels provide a modern twist to the vintage look. The only flaws of any significance are some small (sesame seed size) rock chips in the front apron and headlight buckets from normal highway use that have been touched up and are difficult to see. The car is straight and rust free with the undercarriage as nice as the top of the car.

During the build an all new road-race style suspension was installed including Maier Racing A-Arms with improved geometry and camber curve, Cobra Automotive sway bar, Maeco Motorsports steering and strut rods with spherical bearings, Maier sport springs front and rear, and Race Car Dynamics (RCD) tuned Bilstein shocks. Borgeson steering system with late-model quick ratio power steering, a KRC adjustable pump, and Shelby power steering fluid cooler are well matched. The car also sports 4 wheel disc brakes by Baer.

The engine is a freshly built 351C 4V with forged pistons, Crower rods, an Isky solid cam, ported and polished heads with stainless valves, full ARP fasteners, all oil passages modified for maximum oiling, blueprinted Melling high volume pump, custom Aviad fully baffled 8qt road race oil pan, and a Cobra oil cooler with remote oil filter. It makes 410 horsepower and 390 lb/ft of torque. A new Keisler RS 5-Speed transmission with SPEC stage IV clutch, hydraulic throwout bearing and Hurst shifter were also added, which make shifting and high-speed cruising a smoother affair. A Ford 9-inch rear end with new 3.50 gears, new Moser 31-spline forged axles, and a “soft locker” limited slip unit were installed as well. It is dialed-in for street/canyon use, and cruising at 70mph on the freeway the car is only taching 2, 00 in 5th gear but still pulls VERY strong off the line. Exhaust exits through Hooker headers with dual 3” Magnaflow stainless exhaust. Car was recently tuned and is in perfect running condition.

The interior was completely prepped with Dynamat, new carpet, new Procar seats, all new interior panels and trim, new headliner, and new wiring. A very special dash was pulled from the original Bud Moore Racing mold used to make the dashes for the Parnelli Jones and George Follmer 1970 Trans-Am Championship Boss 302 Mustangs, and finished in camera case crinkle paint and filled with all NOS Stewart Warner gauges, including speedo, tach, oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, amp meter and fuel. All work beautifully, including lights. The stock AM Philco radio is included but is not currently hooked up. The heater is not hooked up either to provide a cleaner look under the hood. Everything else works and is in excellent condition. I recently added a Nardi three spoke leather wrapped wheel with Mustang horn button as well as black and orange Coco mats.

This really is a wonderful car that provides a new owner a couple of options. You could drive it, show it, and even do some track events as it is OR you could further the build with custom stereo, vintage AC to further the restomod/pro-touring effect OR you could strip some weight, add a roll cage and make it a dedicated track car. It's a well done build of super high driver quality. The car sounds incredible and turns heads everywhere it goes.

I am selling due to my expanding collection of european sportscars. As a lifelong enthusiast this is my first American muscle/pony car. It has been a blast and while I have really enjoyed the car and moreover have enjoyed freshening the paint, graphics, misc interior items and tuning the car I've made the decision it's ready to be enjoyed by a new owner. The car is priced significantly less than it cost to build it and once again it is fully sorted and ready to be enjoyed.
