Ford Model T 1923 Description
1923 Ford Model T Roadster For SaleAll steel '23 Ford roadster body with a lot of custom touches and pieces made from scratch. '32 Ford frame rails with a full chrome front suspension, Halibrand V8 style quick change rear end, and Lincoln style self energizing brakes at all 4 corners. The engine is a completely rebuilt and hopped up '49 303 Oldsmobile backed by a '39 Ford 3 speed. Chromed original Ford 4" and 4.5" wheels with Mercury caps and wrapped in Firestone bias ply tires.
The details!
Starting with reproduction '32 frame rails, they were contoured and shortened to match the shape of the '23 body. It is boxed the full length. Up front it has a chromed original Ford V8-60 tube axle and chromed Ford Model A/'42-'48 hybrid wishbones. It is suspended by a one-off Posies quarter elliptic spring setup made special with hidden leaf bushings. The rear axle consists of a Rodsville Halibrand V8 reproduction quick change center section (3.78 ring and pinion with 1:1 gears in the quickie) with '40 axle bells. The bells are flipped side-to-side to mount the spring in front of the axle. Spring is Model T, as is the rear frame crossmember. A shortened torque tube and solid driveshaft tie it all together. The brakes are Wilson Welding Lincoln self energizing Bendix style, all four with chromed backing plates. Front and rear wheel hubs and brake drums are all new from MT Car. The chassis has a custom center crossmember with Ford F1 pedals and a dual reservoir master cylinder. Steering is a '35-'48 style box converted to side steer (like the Niekamp roadster and others).
The engine is fully rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted (I personally did all of the machine work on the short block) early 1949 303 Oldsmobile Rocket. The crank was ground and polished, rods resized, block line honed. New .030 pistons from Egge, full rotating assembly balanced. The '49 heads have been rebuilt with hardened exhaust seats, new guides for the exhaust valves and a 3 angle valve job. Original valves were reconditioned and reused. I did some mild port work, mostly to blend the seats and taper the valve guides. It has later 324 rocker arm assemblies with the 1.8:1 ratio (stock 303 was 1.6:1) with new shafts and pushrods. The cam is a reground stock cam labeled as "mild street" but I do not have the specifics, new lifters. It has a nice idle. New oil pump, water pump, new timing set, the starter was rebuilt and converted to 12 volts. The intake is an Edmunds 2x2 modified to accept 3-bolt carburetors. The carbs are two new Stromberg 97s. The distributor is fully rebuilt and has a Mallory dual point conversion. Custom smoothed aluminum valve covers. The engine does have a small rear main seal leak. It runs excellent!
An original Wilcap adapter mounts the engine to a '39 style Ford transmission. It is a later "78" top loader big-belly case full of '40-'48 internals with all new bearings, bushings and NOS Ford dual syncronizers. It has an original '39 shifter with a detent upgrade kit. It still does like to fall out of 2nd gear on deceleration, a common Ford 3-speed occurrence.
The main tub of the body is original Ford and has been modified some. The top rear edge of the body has been reshaped 2" lower than factory, similar to the Ed Iskenderian T roadster. The door opening has been remade from scratch along with the inner structure of the door. There is no wood left in this car, all structure remade with steel tubing. The floors are all new and built from scratch including the highly modified Lincoln Zephyr transmission cover. The firewall was replaced with a cut down '30/'31 Model A piece. It features Stewart Warner twin-blue mechanical oil pressure and vacuum gauges. The windshield has been chopped about 6"-7" with the posts modified to delete exposed hardware on the sides. Windshield posts and frame have been chromed and the glass is new. The entire turtle deck of this car has been built from scratch. It is mounted 2" higher than the factory deck and features a flush fit deck lid, hidden hinges and a '32 deck lid handle. A matching roll pan mirrors the deck and wraps under the car, slightly exposing the quick change rear end. Over big bumps the rear axle does tap the bottom of the deck - notice the evidence in the pictures. It needs a small c-notch in the deck sides over the axle tubes to clear. The tail lights are original '42-'48 Ford, split by a chrome Yankee license plate light. The dashboard is a modified and narrowed '40 Ford (with the early push-in style ash trays) and later gold face truck gauges (none of the gauges are connected). The glove box door is an old chromed hot rod piece with a very fitting old Moon water slide decal depicting an early T hot rod. The car is in grey primer-sealer. It will need some finish welding in a few places and bodywork to be painted nicely.
Other details - Stainless steel fuel tank, about 10 gallons. Carter electric fuel pump with a Holley filter and regulator. The steering column is a reproduction early Corvette piece with turn signal switch. The signals are not wired but the wiring is in place should you choose to do so. It is topped with a '50 Oldsmobile steering wheel - the hoop of the wheel has been replaced with a smaller diameter piece to better fit the car. The seat was built from scratch and has new upholstery. The car does have seat belts. E-brake handle is not connected. The radiator is aluminum and has a custom made electric fan mount with shroud that hides the fan pretty well. Alternator is a 75 amp Denso. Headlights are Arrow 775. The wheels are original Ford that have been disassembled, chromed, and welded back together - the only way to get the chrome to fill all the crevices. The hubcaps are original '46 Mercury (all in very good shape though not perfect). Tires are Firestone 4.50/4.75-16 front and 7.50-16 rear. The headers are a Gear Drive "driveshaft" header kit and they do have baffles installed.
Please note: The car will NOT come with the club plaque mounted on the headlight bar, the Iskenderian cam tag on the firewall, or the HOP UP license plate. The car is sold as-is, where-is in Austin Texas. It is a hot rod! It is not perfect, but it is pretty awesome. I have been building and working on this car for 4 years and it is time to move on to the next build. This car is obviously not 100% finished, it needs a little bit of bodywork, paint, and an interior. Or leave it as is and just have fun!! I welcome any and all questions and the car can be seen and inspected in person with some notice. I can help with loading. Delivery to the Pomona, CA area the weekend of June 18-20th is possible.
