Ford Mustang 1966 Description
1966 FORD MUSTANG - METICULOUS RESTORATIONHISTORY: I purchased this car in roadworthy condition May of 2007.The car had been “restored” in the mid 90’s. It did have the original engine (200 CI six cylinder) and original automatic transmission (Ford C4). The car was red with a red interior. The VIN indicated original color as “Candy Apple Red” and red interior. My restoration began in early 2008 at Bard’s Restoration Shop with complete disassembly and a goal to restore using original type reproduction parts but maintain stock conditions with the added benefit of some safety and longevity upgrades.
BODY: After disassembly, an assessment of the structure revealed floor pans and rear quarter panels in good solid condition with no issues. The front structure of the car was another matter. It was all there but rust issues were found in the front frame rails and aprons. The front fenders and doors were usable but would require dent repair and we did not want to have that in this type of restoration.Replacement of the front frame rails, firewall, torque boxes, front aprons, shock towers, radiator support, front fenders, doors, hood, deck lid, rear taillight panel and front/rear valance would all be replaced with new reproduction components from CJ Pony. After the front structural metal was completed, the body was prepped(no chemical stripping) then given back to me for installation of the drivetrain and chassis. Once drivetrain/chassis was installed, car was sent back to Bard's to complete sheetmetal fitting and installation. A thorough taping of the engine compartment and underbody was followed by epoxy primer and painted in the original color code with base/clear coat. All chrome, trim, emblems, latches, seals, weatherstrip were fitted with new reproduction parts.
Hardware and fasteners were new, correct reproductions.
DRIVETRAIN: The engine was professionally rebuilt using name brand parts maintaining stock specifications. The only exception was the block bored .030 over to true the cylinders and use o, 030 over pistons. The head was rebuilt using all new valves, springs, rockers/rocker shaft, head bolts and kept to stock specs. All internal parts were replaced with new with the exception of the connecting rods and crankshaft. New timing gears and chain installed along with the cam and lifters. The long block was finished off with a new harmonic damper and flywheel. The alternator, starter, distributor, and water pump were sent out for rebuild (not replaced aftermarket rebuilds). The distributor has been upgraded with Petronix electronic ignition. A new Pony (not rebuilt) carburetor was installed which replicates the original but has an improved metering system internally. New fuel pump, sending units, stainless steel fuel lines, tank, coil and electrical components and wiring were all installed. Radiator was recored and correct hoses and clamps replaced for the cooling system. The exhaust system is stock with the exception of Jet Hot coating of all pipes/muffler and the use of stainless steel heavy duty band clamps. Correct hangers/fasteners were used throughout. The transmission was professionally rebuilt including the torque converter and rear tailhousing bushing. Transmission cooler lines upgraded to stainless steel.A new driveshaft was made with new yokes/joints and balanced professionally. The rear differential was flushed, housing, gears and bearings checked, new wheel bearings and seals.
All fasteners, decals, cables, etc. were replaced using the correct types as came from Ford.
SUSPENSION/BRAKES/TIRES: All front suspension parts, springs, bushings, control arms, ball joints, stabilizer bar (upgraded), steering box (upgraded), shocks, shock perches (upgraded), seals, links, tie rods...everything..all new including correct fasteners.Rear suspension leaf spring bushings were replaced.Brake lines were upgraded to stainless steel with fronts upgraded to power assisted disc brakes (all new master cylinder, booster, adjustable proportioning valve, bearings, seals, rotors, calipers, etc.) and rears with new drums, components and hardware. The brake pedal was also rebushed. The stock steel wheels were media blasted and powder coated black.Coker Classic 195/75-14 Redline Radial Tires were mounted and balanced. Wheel covers are replica styled steel wheel look by Scott Drake.Fasteners, clips, connectors, etc. were all replaced using correct reproduction types as came from Ford.
INTERIOR:The old interior and dash was dismantled. Metal surfaces were prepped and repainted. Inner and under dash components were all new reproduction. The heater box received tear down, prep, new paint, new heater core/components and seals for like new operation.Electrical, gauges, heater controls/cables, cluster trim, glove box and door, handbrake mechanism, vent controls, aftermarket radio, front/rear speakers were all new reproductions. All soft trim, door and window cranks, and hard trim pieces replaced with new. Seats were stripped to metal, blasted and painted prior to new soft upholstery by Secrest Upholstery Shop. Front seats had new reproduction tracks/adjusters installed. Secrest also installed a new headliner with insulation. Seatbelts were replaced and also new front shoulder belts added. New window regulators and lock cylinders/mechanisms installed. Front and rear glass is new as is the front vent window assemblies with new chrome.Correct, reproduction carpet and new insulation was installed.
Reproduction accessories were added as follows (not original equipment):* Fog Lights* Full Console* Rally-Pac Tach & Clock* Woodgrain Steering Wheel
The trunk area was restored with correct new gas tank, gas filler & hose, spare tire hardware, splatter paint and trim pieces. A trunk mat matching stock specifications was installed as was the new spare tire and new jack components.
Fasteners were all replaced using correct reproduction types as came from Ford.
SUMMARY:As you have read, this was a detailed restoration resulting in a car that drives as new and runs flawlessly. It currently has about 1,700 miles(yes only ~1,700) since the restoration and never sees rain. If you are interested in a very nicely restored Mustang with some added safety features and additional Ford options this may be your car!
