GMC Sierra 1500 1987 Description

This truck has been my daily driver going on 2 years now and has been a blast. I've always loved these trucks. I bought a new one in 1981, 1984 and 1987 (no this aint the one I bought new in '87). I've had 11 of these square bodies in 2wd and 4wd since 1981. As most of you know, 1987 was the last year of this body style and the FIRST year Chevrolet and GMC put fuel injection in these trucks. This truck still retains it's original 305 V8 engine. The top end has been redone, but according to my mechanic, the bottom end doesn't appear to have been touched yet. Hard to believe after being on the road 30 years. I regularly drive this truck on 500 mile runs and enjoy every minute of it. The motor runs good, the tranny shifts smooth. This would make a nice daily driver for someone or a good 2nd vehicle or a first truck for a young driver. There has been a lot of upgrades done to make this truck dependable in the last 1-3 years, so a lot of the parts are new and a lot of them are still original so if you have questions, ASK. It is a great looking, driving and riding truck, but I wouldn't call it a show class truck. It is 30 years old. If you are wanting 100% brand new, This one looks close, but I would suggest you contact your local new car dealer. The passenger fuel tank was not used by the guy I bought it from nor have I used it so I unplugged the sending unit on that side to keep from accidentally hitting the transfer switch and getting crud in my engine. The mufflers are a little loud for my taste. Not bad, but not super quiet either (my 25 yr. old son loves the rumble). I was going to install new tail pipes but have been considering changing to a different muffler and haven't done it as of yet so that will be one choice the new owner will get to make. Here's a rundown on what has been done in the past 1-3 years and what I know the condition to be.

Upgrades within the previous 2-3 years

Heads redone, Transmission Rebuilt, New Fuel Tank and Sending Unit on Drivers Side, Alternator

Upgrades made in the last 1-2 years,

Front End: Passenger lower ball joint, tie rod ends, idler arm, bearings inner/outer, seals and front end alignment, New Monroe LT Shocks

Engine Compartment: New Radiator, Radiator Overflow reservoir, All Hoses including Heater hoses, Belts, Improved Valve Seals, Cleaned rear oil galleys in heads. Flushed Engine block and heater core. Fresh Oil and Filter Change, new brake master cylinder, new PCV valve, New Air Conditioning Compressor

Rear End: Flushed Differential, New Spider Gears (large/small), Retainer pin and bolt, Axle Bearings/seal, U-Joints in Drive shaft, New Monroe LT Shocks, Brake Pads and Wheel Cylinders

Interior: Dash Cap, Door panels, Carpet, Driver’s side window motor, window and lock switches, Wiper/Cruise switch (acts funky sometimes, I must have gotten the expensive one built in China—old switch worked great, it was just faded so I installed a new one), Instrument Panel lighting,

Exterior: Paint Job (not show class, but good—it has been my daily driver so it has some pecks and chips by now), new tail lights, new marker lights, New Molding, New Tires, New Center Caps, New Lug Nuts, Rear bumper removed and New Roll Pan installed.

Upgrades Needed: Front and rear seals in engine (on a long trip, when the oil gets thin, it will leak. Have to check oil when fueling on long trips). O rings in AC unit, it will leak Freon out in a week or two (A/C system will pull a good vacuum and has a new compressor but I’m assuming the condensor and receiver are still original so I was just going to put O rings in it and recharge). There is a short in backup lights (they will come on at odd times so I have the bulbs pulled).

As you can see, I have spent tons of time and money on this truck. I'm sure I won't get all I've put into it back but I love these trucks, love working on these trucks and love keeping them in the middle of the road so my loss will be your gain on this one.

I can't verify whether or not the odometer has rolled over but when I bought it, I just assumed it had. Since it's over 10 years old, my title lists it as Mileage Exempt from disclosure anyway. I have tried to list every detail I know about this truck and it may be information overload to you but I try to tell a buyer everything I know so you will know exactly what you are bidding on and as I said above, if you have ANY questions, please ask. If you are looking for a Classic '87 Fuel Injected Square body, you will enjoy this one. It's hard to find a good one that still retains it's original drivetrain even if part of it has been rebuilt.
