GMC Canopy Express 1946 Description
You are bidding on a super Rare GMC (not Chevrolet) Canopy Express. I believe this to be a 46 model. I have a title from a 46 pickup that I was going to use for titling because I used parts from that truck. I have had this vehicle for 26 years now and had plans to total rebuild it upon retirement. Retirement is still several years off and some plans (Wifes) have changed now. I have only seen two others like this and they were both Chevrolets. One was in Hemmings about 20 years ago and sold for a fortune. The other was a clean roller that needed a total rebuild and went for $8000 ten years ago. A buddy found it and flipped it in a day. I have literally not seen another GMC and everybody that I have spoken to about this over the years has never seen a GMC model. I personally like the Chevy grille better but this one just adds to the character and unique nature. Unfortunately I don't have all the pics I really need because the truck is located in the middle of Texas at a friends house and I have no way of getting more pics until I visit. I am happy to supply anybody with an address for you to see in person. Over the past 26 years I have moved this all over Texas. I picked it up in Austin in 1990 from a guy that was building panel vans. He took the front straight axle off and left it in a field. That is where I found it. Only thing that I have really done is store it and finally added the front axle and four wheels to make it a roller. The engine is still in it. It is a GMC straight 6 but has been in the weather forever. I had it covered for most of it's life in Austin but since moving it, t has been in the elements. Somebody took the hood off at some point when it was parked. I have a ton of parts in the bed. I have an extra set of running boards and the upper section of Grille off of a Chevy. The GMC grille is not in good shape at all so that might be an opportunity to just make it a Chevy. There is a 46 GMC listed right now on Ebay so you could see what the grille should look like. The major issue with this is the very back. It looks like a tree dropped on it right in the middle of the back and creased it. I talked to a couple of body guys and they are confident they could work this back out to original. Not gonna sugar coat it..........this will take some work for sure. You could get an S10 kit and throw the body on that and have a modern drive train. My plan was to put it back to original shape regardless of time and money. I know all complete it is easily a very high dollar vehicle and great collector piece. Ask me any questions. I know there are not enough pics to make a great determination. I live in Denver so it is tough to get to it to get more pics. Might have to rely on somebody to shoot some more and load them here. I just wanted to get it loaded this week. I am selling several vehicles to make room/money to finish by 66 Chevy Truck. This will need lots of body work. Main thing is the rear quarter fenders which are super hard to find are not in great shape. The body guy says he could pound one out for sure but the other might need to be replaced. I have located several sets over the years but they are not cheap. The interior will all need to be redone, eats, auges, teering wheel and all need to be redone or replaced. Doors need to be rewelded and adjusted or replaced. I know this sounds like a lot but the main portion (the canopy portion) is intact and is in pretty good shape. Bed needs new wood and the rare wood/metal curved tailgate needs to be rebuilt.
Don't hesitate to call. I do have this for sale locally also soI reserve the right to remove add from ebay. I would consider some kind of partial trade/cash for a 283 Chevy engine and Auto trans for my 66 Truck or Ninja 500.
Last thing is.............the vehicle is on a trailer now. It will need to be trailered. I would consider selling my 20 foot all steel bed trailer with this or might work a deal to haul it to your location. Just ask.
PLEASE NOTE - This vehicle is not in Colorado. It is located in Abilene Texas at a buddy's house. Sorry. I meant to add this information for purposes of looking at the vehicle or transporting.
Call me if you have any questions. I should have more pics downloaded tonight. 303-960-9109 is my cell phone. If you miss me leave a message and I will respond.
