Title In-Hand
This beautiful 1988 Cherokee XJ is a rare find, with 87,000 original miles and OEM or OEM-spec parts! If you’re looking for a classic American cruiser to restore to perfection, a weekend road warrior, or daily driver, there is no finer example than this.
A true Pacific Northwest Cherokee, this example was purchased in Portland, Oregon and has lived its entire life between Portland and Seattle…with the occasional road trip. She has been responsibly maintained by every owner, and is 100% Rust Free! She also has a clean CARFAX report with no accidents!
Over 2 Million Cherokees were sold from 1984-2001, which is a testament to their durability and desirability. As a result, replacement parts are readily available and inexpensive, making the Cherokee one of the most fixable & restorable classic 4x4s on the market.
This survivor is as close to an OEM-spec Cherokee XJ as you’ll likely find anywhere, and with 87,000 original miles there’s a lot of life left in the bulletproof 4.0L Inline Six Cylinder. The flat-folding rear seat provides a lot of utility in this maneuverable 4x4, and Command-Trac 4-Wheel Drive makes the Cherokee an ideal travel partner for ski weekends in the Cascades.
Whether you’re looking for a low-mileage Cherokee to take off-road, or an unmolested example of an American Classic, there is no better Cherokee on the market!
OWNERSHIP HISTORY
This Cherokee Pioneer Olympic Edition was purchased new in 1988 by an older couple from Northwest Jeep in Beaverton OR. According to the second owner, when the older man passed away his wife garaged the vehicle and never drove it. In July 2007, with only 46,000miles on the odometer, the vehicle was serviced by Northwest Jeep to ensure her road worthiness, and driven a total of 2,000miles over the next 4 years.
In July 2011, a young British couple living in Ballard (Seattle WA) were searching for a “Classic American†vehicle as their city car, when they discovered the Cherokee for sale with only 48,465miles on the odometer. They paid $6,800. Full service records are available from their ownership period, which show regular preventative maintenance, and timely repairs of small items as needed.
Three years later, in July 2014, the couple was planning their return to England so they sold the Cherokee to me, the third owner, with 71,050miles on the odometer. I paid $7,000. I bought this particular Cherokee because I wanted an older, classic 4x4 as a daily city driver, and couldn’t pass up an opportunity to buy such a low mileage machine that was virtually unmolested and in great shape. My goal has always been to preserve the OEM look & feel of the vehicle, while replacing critical systems (A/C, Ignition System, Fuel Systems, etc) to eliminate any risk of failure. My commitment to OEM shows, as this might be the only Cherokee with the stock radio!
RECENT SERVICE
During my ownership, I have brought all systems up to working order, while selectively replacing certain parts as preventative maintenance. I am proud to say that absolutely everything on this vehicle works as it should: every light bulb works, HVAC controls (including Air Conditioning) work flawlessly, the stock radio cranks, and every switch (even cruise control!) performs as it did when new.
Immediately upon purchasing the Jeep, I removed all seats & consoles and shampooed the carpets. The headliner & visors were replaced by Rich’s Custom Upholstery in Seattle WA, with fabric that was a flawless match for the OEM color & texture. All bulbs were replaced inside & out, including an H4 headlight conversion. Rubber door seals & hatch seals were also replaced.
Six months later, with 74,030miles on the odometer, I replaced all 5 tires with OEM-spec Goodyear Wrangler Radials. The Jeep actually had the original tire on the Spare wheel that was 27yrs old, so I made sure it was replaced with modern rubber!
A year into ownership, with 75,926, I had Bernie’s Automotive in Ballard (Seattle WA) perform major preventative maintenance and a few repairs, including:
→Transmission fluid flush
→Front & rear differentials flushed
→Replaced non-functioning A/C condenser, convert refrigerant to R134a
→Replaced radiator, hoses, and serpentine belt
→Replaced muffler & catalytic converter
Other notable service during my ownership includes replacement of:
→Throttle Position Sensor (failure is common, which can result in erratic shifting & fuel economy)
→Oxygen Sensor (to ensure proper fuel economy)
→Fuel filter
→Spark plugs/distributor cap & rotor/wires
→Headlight switch (to fix dimmer function)
I recently installed the Putco Heavy Duty Headlight Wiring Harness for stronger wattage to the headlights. With this harness you can run 80/100W bulbs, though I’m still running the stock 55/60W setup.
And just yesterday, with 86,575miles on the odometer, I replaced the fuel tank, fuel pump, and tank straps in the name of preventative maintenance. I have no records of any service performed on the fuel system, so I figured 30years was long enough for what I assume was the stock tank & pump.
Oil & filter changes were performed at ~5,000 intervals with Mobile1 5W-30 Full Synthetic.
WHY I’M SELLING, AND WHAT I’D DO NEXT
I love this Jeep, and it pains me to sell it, but unfortunately a professional relocation to San Francisco means I simply won’t have the time/space/tools required to maintain this 29yo the way she deserves.
Were I to keep her, here are a few final upgrades I would perform:
→Replace all suspension components & bushings, probably a 2†lift to give her a muscular stance without looking like a wheeler. Keep stock wheels & tires for OEM look
→Polish & re-clearcoat OEM wheels, to fix peeling clearcoat
→Inexpensive paint job to add new shine, as the original paint is heavily faded on hood & roof
Beyond these bigger-ticket upgrades, you’ll find this Cherokee in near-perfect shape, and has been a joy to use as my low-mileage daily driver!
