Jeep CJ 1984 Description

1984 Jeep CJ-7 Renegade. From the factory this Jeep came equipped with a 258 ci straight six engine. Prior owner installed a re-manufactured AMC 304 ci (5.0 litre) V8.

Must sell due to relocation to CA for work. Vehicle is garaged in South Carolina and will ship from that location.

Weird situation…here are the details - CA smog regulations will not accept a vehicle for registration that had an engine change where the engine installed predated the application model year.....in short, his Jeep has a new(er) engine but one that would have been originally installed in an '81 or earlier Jeep CJ as an option......this is a big no-no in CA and in order to register, would be required to make another engine change to an engine offered in the ’84 model year or a newer engine of some sort….I would also need to add CA smog control equipment to pass the required testing. With a cross-country move underway, can’t manage this expense.

So, ere’s the story….

1984 Jeep CJ-7 - 304 V8 with a 5 speed transmission (Borg-Warner T5) and a Dana 300 TC.

Things I completed during my ~4 years…..

Herculined the tub

NewBestopseats front and rear

NewHooker, n-frame headers

New Holley 4 barrel carburetor

Pioneer stereo mounted in a locking, teel, enter console

roll-bar mounted, loor level, x9 speakers (see photo)

Original CJ Laredo chrome wagon wheels

New paint and decals.

New (<300 miles) 31x10.5x15 BFG A/T

Chrome Laredo grill

Just replaced inner and outer front wheel bearings and seals this Spring.

Body is rust free, rame is surface rust only if there is any at all...I have spent time under the Jeep and never noted anything beyond the dirt pictured in the photos.

Front differential, ngine oil, ransmission, ransfer case, nd rear differential fluid changed each year since I bought it in 2011.

The bad stuff

I have a soft top but it is pretty old at this point. I have never used anything other than a bikini top.

It leaks oil at start up from the rear main seal but stops or substantially slows upon return to low idle. I've replaced the rear main twice and have been unable to resolve this. I'm told it is "a jeep design problem."

Very minor drips from Front and rear diff and transfer case.

The heater, orn, riginal fuel, nd H/C temp gauge do not work.

I have described it to the best of my knowledge but would be happy to answer any questions. It’s not perfect but gets a lot of looks and is a blast to drive.
