I bought this Monterey a couple of years ago, since then, I've bought a Galaxie that I parted out, a Marauder that I will do a complete restoration and another Galaxie that I will most likely rat rod it. I chose this Mercury because it was from the junk yard and I didn't want to see it crushed, interior and exterior was in great shape. I got it running and with some TLC it will be on the road in no time. In the time I've owned it, my family grew, I don't have the time and I need the space for the other projects and cash for the holidays. The usual. I did accomplish a lot in the couple of years that I've owned it:
Engine:
390ci 300HP 6.4L V8 with 2 Barrel Autolite 2100 Carburetor. The fuel system was completely gone thru, professionally rebuilt carb at a shop that I've been going to over 10 years. New fuel line and filter from carb to fuel pump, cleaned the fuel line from pump to fuel tank. Newer reproduction fuel tank and sending unit. Fuel and other gauges work.
New Autolite spark plugs, wires (8mm ACCEL) and coil (ACCEL). New distributor cap, new points and condenser, new voltage regulator, new starter relay and new deep cycle battery. I lubricated the cylinders before starting. New oil and filter. New ignition switch (the old one is still in the dash, I can't remove it without the key and I did not want to drill it out). Chrome valve covers and new valve cover gaskets.
When I started the car, I discovered a lower end knock at idle. Went away with acceleration. I'm not a mechanic or expert, but with some help, I diagnosed to either the main or piston bearings. I dropped the oil pan, cleaned it and removed 2 random piston bearings and inspected. They were worn. Installed a new oil pump, pick up screen and oil pan gasket. I think I installed the rod the drives the oil pump (from the distributor) wrong and now there is no oil pressure. I will leave this for the new owner to resolve. The cylinder walls and pistons did look good. At the least, it will need a bottom end rebuild. It starts right up and runs but without oil pressure, I leave it alone.
Transmission, Brakes and Accessories
The 3 speed "Cruise-O-Matic" Transmission shifted into D, R and P with no issues. There is absolutely no brakes. I diagnosed it to needing a Power Brake Booster and there is a cut brake line in the rear. The brake hardware at the wheels did look fair.
The rear window and radio works. No horn and no windshield wipers. The wiring harness from the wiper motor to the main wiring harness was damaged so I removed it. I did test the wiper motor and it works.
Body and Interior
All the glass is good, no cracks or chips. All the windows open. Tires are fair and I added the correct hubcaps. All the doors open and close excellent, no sagging doors. I lubricated the hinges.
The paint and interior is good (not perfect). Has been repainted and there are some flaws. Body is fairly straight but there are some dents on the left rear and on the bumpers. Some small rust spots has started to form on the bottom of the doors, roof rails and pillar. The floorboards and frames appear to be rust free. I had It on 4 jack stands and did a deep inspection. Only surface rust on the floorboards in the front (I removed the torn carpet for inspection). Muffler itself has rust holes. Only a few missing trim pieces. One is in the trunk. No trunk lock.
The door panels and dash are original. Headliner and seats have been redone. The rear seat has 1 small hole otherwise it's perfect. The front seat has some discoloration in the driver's area but it's in great shape. Seats are firm.
Title and Plates:
The title is form 1974 and it has both matching original black and yellow license plates (not the newer "Legacy" plates). In CA if you can show that the plates are original to the car (with a title or registration) the DMV will allow you to keep the plates. I have all the receipts for all the new parts I replaced.
