Mercury Capri 1993 Description

Please read the entire description as I have done my best to describe everything about this vehicle. . ...

1993 Mercury Capri XR2 (cousin of the Mazda Miata MX-5 and included some stuff that should have been in that car)

This vehicle was built as a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Mazda and was sold in the United States in model years 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994.

It was also sold as the Ford Capri in other countries (specifically Australia and parts of Europe)

I am not a mechanic so I couldn’t begin to explain all of the subtle similarities and differences between the Miata and Capri so if you are serious about this vehicle and want to know more I will let you do your own due diligence and research.

The motor is a Mazda 1.6L similar to the first generation Miata's. The XR2 model came with a factory turbo (and in my opinion) a much needed spoiler.

This vehicle is front wheel drive versus the rear drive Miata which makes it more desirable to many people (especially in bad weather areas or young drivers will be driving it)

This particular car I have only owned for a few months and honestly only had it because I took pity on someone who was short on money.

I was purchasing another item from Craigslist at the owners home and saw this Capri sitting in their driveway that they wanted to sell. The owner was desperate for money to pay for medical bills and as caregiver myself and because I’ve been looking for a fun car for the weekend, I decided to take a chance on this cute little convertible as it needed someone to own it that would give it the love it deserved.

Since then I have gone through and changed the oil, buffed the paint, replaced the front brakes, purchased a replacement stereo (not installed yet) and a handful of other small repairs that are hardly worth mentioning.

As much as I would love to keep this, the driveway is only so big and as a live-in caregiver I don’t want to take up more time and space of the driveway of the elderly person I take care of. As this car needs some work to run optimally, I have no choice but to part with the Capri and go with something that doesn’t need as much time put into it.

The honest breakdown and mechanics of this car, as this is my first time selling a car online and want to be as truthful as I can be.

- Things I noticed.

The car starts right up...even if you let it sit for a 2-3 weeks.

Turbo seems to spin up properly and really does add the speed and acceleration one wants from a car like this.

Transmission shifts properly…and is one of the smoother five speeds I’ve driven.

Brakes are good and will likely be better once it is driven more regularly.

Tires have less than 500 miles on them

The drivers side window does not go down but I believe it is just the switch on that door because the switch will not move the passenger side either yet if you use the passenger switch it works fine.

Turn signals and break lights work but in all honesty the electrical should be looked at, as I didn’t and neither did Pepe as he does not specialize in electrical work but he mentioned there could be other issues with that.

The convertible top should be replaced in my opinion (they go for around $250 on eBay) but if only driving on warm days and storing it indoors perhaps not a concern right away (tried to capture it honestly but it may be worse than in picture....back window 3/4 separated now)

The trunk latch is not attached to the car. All of the parts on the lid are there so you would need the bottom piece for it to latch.

Other than that it has bumps and bruises and stains as you would expect from a car that is now 23 years old.

- Things the mechanic (Pepes Auto Repair in L.A.) found on inspection.

Buyer of this auction will recieve an CA DMV Application For Duplicate Or Paperless Title (signed by previous/original owner) and a CA DMV Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (also signed by previous owner). For CA buyers, seller believed this car had not been registered in more than 7 years so it is out of the DMV computer but please feel free to call sacramento and verify it using the VIN. Using the license plate and Vin # on the CA.DMV Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator, I came up with $800.00 to register this car in CA, I think that would be on top of tags and smog test cost. For CA residents this car may be best for Parts. I’m trying to be honest with this listing so you know exactly what your bidding on. I’m not looking to make a profit but recoup some money on a car that is not going to work for me.

If it makes the transaction go easier I can pick you up from LAX.

Willing to help in any way to get this "cousin" of the Miata to a good home. Capri is currently not resisted so trailer will be need for transport.
