Mercury Cougar 1970 Description
The Mercury Cougar of 1970 had a revised look that was designed to retain the untamed spirit that Mercury had built into this model. The new look was sleeker in silhouette, longer in line and sportier in its flair throughout. The car was available as a convertible or hardtop and was meant to convey the hand-tooled appearance of European Grand Touring cars of the era. It was a full-grown, full-fledged sports machine with “impeccable road manners and a smooth ride.” With many options and performance packages to offer, the 1970 Cougar could easily fall into multiple categories from wild to elegant. The beautiful example being offered is one that falls on the wild side with the XR7 build, Cougar Eliminator visual tribute package, and the original 351W - 2V engine. Factory writings of the period declared: “Cougar Eliminator…spoilers hold it down…nothing holds it back.” The Cougar Eliminator was presented to the public as a performer that had the hardware to match. The front and rear spoilers provided an immediate clue, as did the racing-style mirror, blacked-out grille with hidden headlights, hood scoop and full-length Eliminator side stripes. This classic Cougar is sold with the original purchaser sales documents, protect-o-plate, owner’s manual, build sheet, trim sheet and various other original documents that every collector or enthusiast love to have. This Eliminator Tribute features its original 351W, and legendary Ford C4 Automatic transmission. It may not be as potent as the 428 Cobra Jet that should lie under the hood, but this Windsor is no slouch! According to the owner; the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt, and based on the way it runs… I have no doubt! There is no smoke or blow-by
The body and paint is about as close to flawless as you will find. The body panels are perfectly smooth, and the new paint was professionally applied by a reputable body shop with decades of experience. This car spent almost its entire life in the upper Northwest where (thankfully) salt is not used on the roadways. This resulted in a rust-free beautiful car that still sports all of its original steel.
The original houndstooth interior is in excellent shape with only minimal wear showing on the upholstery. Everything from the carpet to the headliner is in extremely good condition. All the gauges are in correct working order… including the factory A/C which has a new compressor installed. All the glass is in excellent shape, and the windows roll up and down with ease. And of course… the headlight doors work perfectly!
Ford was one of the vanguards of the muscle car movement in the 1960s and ‘70s and the special cars from this era continue to be coveted nearly 50 years later. The performance engineers and designers of the Ford / Mercury Division created a proud pedigree that is evident to even a glance; authoritative and rarely seen, this XR7 with Eliminator visual clone package will be a welcome addition to any garage.
At our dealership we work very hard to accurately describe our vehicles through text descriptions and elaborate photos. When you purchase a pre-owned vehicle it is not a new vehicle. Any used vehicle can have normal wear and blemishes. Before placing a bid please read the descriptions thoroughly and view all pictures.
