Mercury Monterey 1957 Description
The 1957 Mercurys were completely restyled compared to the previous year’s lineup. For the first time, the brand had bodies that were exclusive to it and not based on Fords or Lincolns. This wonderful 50’s cruiser features a concave vertical bar grille, front hinged hood, 'V' shaped taillights, upper rear fender and rear deck sculpturing, and cowl vent intakes as several of the new features for 1957.
The front bumper is massive with two huge "intakes" cut into each side, and a chrome 'M' was placed between the grille and bumper. The early models have two headlights, and (like this one) the later models have four. The rear bumper mimicked the front; however, it is set to look like there were "exhaust" vents. The tail lights are angled triangles set in an abbreviated concave rear "wing-like" top of the quarter panel where "Mercury" in individual block letters is set.
The hardtops were now called Phaetons: "Phaeton Coupe" and "Phaeton Sedan." All automatic transmission Mercurys used push-button drive, and is powered by the standard Ford 312 CID V-8..
The new Mercury Monterey was so popular; it was the official pace car at the 1957 Indianapolis 500 race.
This particular Mercury has been completely restored, and features its original 312 V-8 engine and Merc-O-Matic push button automatic transmission. The body and paint on this car are absolutely beautiful, and were professionally restored to the original colors of #06 Classic White & #32 Sunset Orchid. This undocumented 2-owner car just recently arrived from sunny, dry Arizona and has never seen a spot of rust in its life!
The interior has been reupholstered in a very tasteful and useable cloth material that is very comfortable for long trips. It is in excellent shape with absolutely no signs of wear. The only item that shows its age is the steering wheel that is cracked, and therefore covered in steering wheel wrap.
The original Ford 312 V-8 was completely rebuilt approximated 8 years ago, and runs like a dream! The automatic Merc-O-Matic transmission was also rebuilt at that time, and shifts perfectly through the gears with ease.
All the exterior chrome has either been re-chromed or replaced as well as all the pot metal. All the glass is in excellent shape, and all the windows roll up and down effortlessly.
This is a timeless car from the 50’s that is a pleasure to look at as well as drive! Sure… you can have a Tri-Five Chevy and be just like everyone else at the car show, or you can stand out with probably the ONLY ’57 Phaeton Coupe!
