Oldsmobile Cutlass 1983 Description

In 1983, GM offered a limited-edition factory-built Hurst/Olds - it was the 15th anniversary of the very first Hurst/Olds introduced in 1968. The Hurst Lightning Rod floor shifter was introduced in the '83 H/O. For its 15th Anniversary Edition, the '83 H/O came only in black with silver rocker panels. Chrome 15" wheels fitted Goodyear Eagle GT tires, and a power bulge hood and rear spoiler gave the car a purposeful look. A modified version of Oldsmobile's 307 CID V8 was installed, along with 3.73 gears and Hurst's radical Lightning Rods shifter. Dual exhausts with rumbling mufflers meant there was no mistaking the H/O for a garden variety Cutlass. A new style "Hurst/Olds" emblem was introduced, and red and silver stripes separated the black and silver paint. Demand for the car was very strong. Originally, 2500 units were scheduled to be produced, but Olds had to up that number to 3001 because of high demand.

Only 3,001 examples were built all of them black with a silver lower body and red dividing stripe. Special badges, door graphics, a rear spoiler, and styled steel wheels were part of the striking exterior package. All of the cars came off Olds’ assembly line in Lansing, MI, and then shipped about 45 miles away to secondary manufacturer Cars and Concepts (who, at the time, owned Hurst performance), which changed each Cutlass into a Hurst model. Each carried the order code W-40. According to the 83/84 Hurst/Olds registry between 600 and 700 of the original 3,001 cars built are still in existence today.

Performance-wise, every 1983 Hurst/Olds packed a four-barrel-fed, 307-cube engine with 180 horsepower, a Hydra-Matic 200-4R overdrive transmission, and a 3.73 rear axle. Along with its 180 horses was a solid 245 lb-ft of torque. It was a combination good for 16-second quarter-miles and 0-60 sprints of about nine seconds. The performance may not have set the dragstrip on fire, but the Hurst Lightning Rod shifter system gave the car a unique, signature feature that looked wild and worked quite well. Essentially a mechanical version of the electronically controlled, manual-shift automatics used in many cars today, the Lightning Rod shifter enabled the driver to use a separate shifter for each upshift. The shifter has proven very robust over the years and is a huge talking point at shows

This Hurst/Olds is a nice clean lower mile one owner survivor car that is unrestored and a true classic car collectable.

A very solid California & early (1985) southern car which has all its original paint, rare factory T-Tops, and W40 Hurst package which includes the infamous Hurst Lightning Rod shifter. Paint is faded and cracked as GM used lacquer paint that had big issues even when new so for the car to still have its original paint 34 years later says allot about the care taking and condition of the car. All original so you know what you are buying.

Sold brand-new at University Sales and Service in Costa Mesa, California & then driven to Charleston, SC in 1985 where it has remained ever since.

All original body panels - no accident history

Perfect Auto/Check report

All matching-numbers drive-train (that has never been out of the car)

Still has all original Hurst/Olds (unique) exhaust system on the car!

Original spare in the trunk that has never been on the ground / even has the original GMfloor matsstill in the car

Never been smoked in - no rips or tears or missing interior parts

All original body panels line up nice, door gaps,, etc. are very nice, just as it left the factory

Car is listed in the Hurst/Olds national registry

Over 150 pages of paperwork & documentation come with the car

Recent (01/2017) service include:

- (4) New BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires

- New intake gaskets, thermostat & gasket, valve cover gaskets and complete tune-up (plugs, wires, etc.) done to factory specs

- New transmission mount w/ complete transmission service filter, fluid, etc.

- All new heater hoses and by-pass hose

- New headlight switch

- All belts and hoses replaced

The only things that do not work on the car is the A/C (needs anevaporator core & a manifold line) and the factory electric antenna and I have been told that it can be removed and sent away, fixed and re-installed

Any questions, please feel free to ask. I have perfect ample high dollar feedback with over 15 years selling oneBay.
