Oldsmobile Cutlass 1964 Description
Is it just me or are Oldsmobiles getting more popular? We can't seem to keep cars like this 1964 Oldsmobile F85 hardtop in stock. Perhaps it's the combination of luxury and performance that appeals to buyers or maybe the handsome yet restrained good looks. Either way you're getting a heck of a lot of car for not a lot of cash when you shop for a Rocket. In the early days of the horsepower wars the F85 was designed to appeal to the younger Oldsmobile buyer and it did so with a classic combination of a mid-sized body and a stout V8 engine. The same platform that underpins the other GM intermediates works just as well here giving the F85 clean lines and a sleek overall look. Repainted a few years ago after long-term ownership in a single family (more than 50 years!) it enjoyed a color change from Jade Green to bright red and the choice was a good one. No longer a wallflower this F85 now looks the part of a '60s performer. All the trim was pulled and polished while the paint was being done and the looks is just about ideal without any extraneous brightwork to detract from the purposeful vibe this Olds gives off. The bodywork was taken down to bare metal for the respray and with a wet sand and buff could probably be taken up a notch or two but even as it sits this car gets attention just because it's not the usual Pontiac or Chevy.Bright white vinyl upholstery is an awesome contrast to the red paint and the all-new interior is the jewel in this car's crown. Buckets with a column shifter seems unusual but for Oldsmobile it was pretty common and neatly balances sport and luxury. Fresh door panels complement the seats and with black carpets it has a dignified look that's still low maintenance. The steering wheel is a wonderfully ornate piece that's in fantastic condition and you might note that the speedometer has additional markings to compensate for the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that was swapped in place of the PowerGlide 2-speed. There are also auxiliary gauges tucked under the dash and a modern AM/FM stereo head unit so it's contemporary and ready to cruise. The back seat is big enough for real-sized adults and the massive trunk offers a correct mat and a full-sized spare with its own cover.Oldsmobile's 330 cubic inch was all about torque and moves the relatively light F85 with real gusto. It was rebuilt to stock specs just recently and runs superbly with a unique V8 sound that should be familiar to Oldsmobile guys. The gold engine and red air cleaner are correct and proper reproduction decals were used wherever they were needed. Power steering and power brakes work with the automatic transmission to convey that easy driving style Oldsmobile cultivated with its buyers and it pulls well through all three gears. The single exhaust sounds muffled and appropriate for the big coupe and there's a new gas tank hanging out back. Familiar Oldsmobile Rally II wheels are color-matched to the body and now carry fresh 14-inch blackwall radials.Complete with the original warranty card and owner's manual this is a cool cruiser with an unusual look and a great history that's ready to rock today.
