Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight 1957 Description
This car came out of a long storage in Grand Junction. Co. . I bought it on Ebay about two years ago. It was thought to be a 22K original mileage vehicle. due to the storage and story of little use by an older fellow who had his keys finally taken away. The engine was stuck. but everything was there and the car was and is completely rust free. I thought the engine may free up with a little work and it finally did with a complete overhaul. I am reasonably sure that the car had more than 22K miles due to the engine condition on taking it apart. That being said. the vehicle runs and drives very well now after being bored . 030 with everything in it and on it being rebuilt or replaced with new parts. The transmission also appeared to have been worked on at some point. was flushed out and with new fluid performs well. The brakes were also gone through. shocks were replaced. carb rebuilt and a Petronix ignition system installed. Fuel pump was replaced with an electric one so there is no vacuum line for the wipers at this point. Old rebuildable fuel and vacuum pump is included. Tank was removed. cleaned and sealed. The car has mostly original paint ( about 80%) and is thin in places and has some hood rash in front - probably from gravel road use I'd say. Some repaint work appears to have been done on tailgate and a couple of doors. The rear bumper was a little bent so I had it repaired and rechromed. All the other chrome and stainless trim is very good to excellent . There is a scrape on the drivers side rear door ( shown ) and a few other minor places that could be fixed if someone wanted. I had no plans to paint the car so I left them. All the glass is excellent and all windows operate fine. The windshield must have been replaced at some point. Being an 88. this car does not have power steering or brakes. but actually steers and stops quite well. It is also devoid of almost every other option. including carpet. The original rubber mat is still in the car and in good condition. There is a radio and heater. The back up lights were purchased and installed by myself although the car came with none. I could not locate any delete plates which it would have had from the factory. The door side panels were replaced with factory type material but the vinyl is original. The front seat was removed. rebuilt with new padding and recovered by a shop ( material and vinyl ). The rear seat was not recovered. but new material comes with the car if anyone wanted to. Original headliner is very good. Door locks work. but the tailgate lock does not. Tires are old but keep good pressure. rear snow tires from Colorado still there. This is overall a very solid car that has never seen any rust. could be taken further or used as is with new tires. I have another project and am done working on this one. I will post a variety of pictures ( one coming out of storage ) and a few with work being done. I have more if you need to see anything in particular. Or you can send a question or call 409-313-3029. Thanks.
