Plymouth Duster 1973 Description

This is a freshly built 1973 Plymouth Duster that started life as an original Basin Blue 340 Automatic car that has had a complete nut and bolt rotisserie restoration and was rebuilt to resemble a 1971 model. Looking under the hood you see a completely unique LA based stroked 416 cubic inch motor filled with custom CNC billet Aluminum parts like a one piece timing chain cover with integrated motor mounts or the custom made billet valve covers or the -20AN water neck, low mount alternator and power steering brackets or modified Billet Specialties air cleaner covering the custom throttle brackets and linkage, door inserts, center console parts, brake pedal..ect.

Here are some of the specifics of the build:

BODY- The body has been completely media blasted and the Quarters panels, full floor pan, Trunk pan, tail panel, Outer Rocker panels and inner fenders were all replaced with quality AMD parts. All the side marker lights were replaced with flush L.E.D oval markers from Hagan Street rods along with their oval fuel door. The factory door handles were replaced with modern GM parts from a 2005 Malibu. The rear deck lid spoiler was hand formed and is all steel. The AAR style hood is from VFN Fiberglass and has been extensively modified and reworked and is held down with a pair of Hotchkis billet hood pins. The steel front bumper is shaved, narrowed and tucked into the body and also incorporates a pair of 55 watt driving lights and a retractable billet tow hook. The front spoiler is from Spoilers by Randy. The steel rear bumper is also shaved, narrowed and tucked along with Factory bumper exhaust cutouts from a 2012 Dodge Ram added and stainless steel oval tips. The factory cowl vent has been replaced with a custom fabricated smaller oval designed opening. The firewall has been smoothed and the wiper motor has been relocated to the interior side of the firewall and retains stock linkage. The inner fenders and transmission tunnel both have been raised 1.5” to allow all for added suspension travel and also for the raised driveline in the chassis for additional ground clearance while keeping the body as low as possible. There is a custom made steel Radiator cover that flows into a modified hood latch support. The front turn signals/marker lights in the grill and the rear brake/turn/running lights are Custom L.E.D’s beneath OEM lens. The fender mounting bolts have all been shaved adding to a clean and smooth engine compartment. The wheel tubs are made from 16 gauge steel and were specifically made for this car and designed to still utilize the rear seat. The Glass is all new from AMD and has a very light aftermarket tint that was installed by Custom Trim of Akron. The Paint and body work was professionally done by Tom Bodalski of Bodacious Cycle Paint Works and is Black Two Stage Base Coat/Clear paint from BASF and then accented with Dodge Mineral Grey and a Dodge Viper Red pinstripe on the hood, fenders, and bumpers.

INTERIOR- The center point and main attraction of this car is the Kilduff Lightning Rod style shifter surrounded by a modified Gen II Stiletto console from Modern Classic Interiors. The dash is custom made and filled with custom made Gauges from the Autometer Custom Shop. The speedometer is electronically controlled by their GPS interface. The tilt steering column is from Flaming River and Formula style steering wheel is from Billet Specialties. The Cipher racing seats have been modified by removing the shoulder bolsters and the suede inserts were upgraded to give them a more “factory” look. The rear seat has been redesigned to fit around the modified floor pan and wheel tubs then covered in the same material as the front seats everything matches. The rear package tray or speaker shelf was custom made out of 16 gauge steel and painted to match the exterior colors. The door panels and headliner were custom made and covered in the same material as the seats, the armrests are from Fesler Products and the door handles are from Gabes Custom Interiors. The Brake pedal is Custom made from 1” thick Billet aluminum and matches the Lokar Gas pedal. Seat Belts are from Crow Racing products and feature clip in lap belts.

WHEELS & TIRES- The Huntington wheels are from Bonspeed and are fully Powder coated to match the Dusters accent color. The Fronts wheels are 17” x 7” with 215/55ZR17 Hankook tires and the rears wheels are 17” x 12” wrapped with huge 345/40R17 Toyo Proxis tires.

BRAKES-Both Front and rear brakes feature Wilwood 12.19 diameter drilled and slotted rotors. The front calipers are Forged Dynapro 6 piston with Forged Dynapro 4 piston calipers in the rear. The Master cylinder and the adjustable proportioning valve are also both from Wilwood.

ENGINE- The build started with a 1970 340 LA block and is now stroked to 416 cubic inches that produced 502hp and 498lb torque. Internal parts include a BPE Forged stroker crank and Compstar Connecting Rods with Diamond Racing Forged Pistons. Edelbrock RPM heads were bowl blended and then fitted with Comp Cams springs, 10 degree locks and Harland Sharp 1.5 Roller Rockers. The Camshaft is a Comp Cams Extreme Energy solid lift with .520/.540 lift. The intake is a Indy Cylinder Head Mod Man modified for EFI and the fitted with 44 lb/hr Siemens injectors and uses two FAST polished Four barrel 4150 throttle bodies. Arp bolts and Studs were used throughout the entire motor. All the engine and head work was done by Compuflow in Medina, Ohio. And the motor was tuned and Dyno’d by ProCar Associates in Akron, Ohio

EXHAUST- Headers are from TTI and feature 1 7/8” diameter tubes designed to fit B/E bodies and were modified to a ball/socket style collector for additional ground clearance. A 2 ½”custom made exhaust features Quick time Performance electric exhaust cut outs and Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers and everything has been ceramic coated by New Image Powder coating in Struthers, Ohio.

COOLING- The Cooling system starts with a Be-Cool Radiator that has been modified to accept -20AN fittings; the water pump is a remotely mounted electric pump from Mezerie with custom made billet -16AN block adapters and thermostat housing.

TRANSMISSON- Cope Racing provided the 727-4 Pro Street reverse manual shift transmission and the Torque converter is from PTC and is a 9.5” diameter with 3500 RPM stall.

REAR AXLE- The rear housing is a narrowed and back braced Chrysler 8 ¾” that has been powder coated with Moser axles and a 742 center section with Yukon 3.90 gears and a Detroit Truetrac locking differential.

SUSPENSION- The powder coated front suspension was specifically made for this car by Denny Laube of HDK suspension and features a Power Steering rack and a KRC Power Steering pump, QA1 shocks with 10” front 375lb springs and 12” rear 150 lb springs, the 2” drop Pro Spindles are from Wilwood and the 1” HDK sway bar is sourced from Helwig. The rear suspension is a custom made powder coated triangulated 4 link that features fully adjustable 1.5” diameter link bars and .l25” frame reinforcement braces and HD torque boxes. The Chassis has been additionally stiffened with the use of U.S Car Tool sub frame connectors, an XV Engineering lower radiator support and .187” steel rear firewall bracing that replaced the factory cross support behind the rear seat.

ELECTRICAL- American Autowire Highway 22 panel wiring kit is used throughout the car powered by two red top Optima batteries in a custom made aluminum mount and keep charged by a Black Anodized Mechman 170 amp alternator. The ignition system consists of a MSD 6AL controller and uses a MSD Blaster coil to send spark to a FAST Dual Sync billet distributor. The Electronic Fuel Injection is controlled by a FAST XFI 2.0 ECU.

This car has been featured in the January 2017 issue of Mopar Collectors guide, Mopar Connection magazine online and named it “The Most Visually Stunning Street Machine at the 2016 Mopar Nationals by Hot Rod magazine.
