Plymouth Road Runner 1969 Description
The Road Runner's formula was simple: bargain-priced performance, ut the boys at Plymouth took it one step further with the A12 by giving their lightweight brawler the biggest engines available, emoving options, nd adding gear like lift-off hoods. The results were the nastiest cars on the block, nd this freshly restored 1969 Road Runner emulates those A12 cars that were built for combat right off the showroom floor. The A12 cars that were built for just one purpose: dominate the drag strip. They had lift-off hoods (just like the one on this car), inimal options (just like this car), nd a 440 Six Pack powerplant to light it all up. None, owever, ere this beautifully built with gorgeous Inferno Barracuda Orange paint that practically leaps off the sheetmetal and slaps you upside the head and reminds you to pay attention. Clean bodywork shows off the tweaked sheetmetal that makes these cars so special, ncluding the crease that runs the length of the rear quarters and the forward-canted greenhouse that suggests great power and speed. The lift-off hood is satin black, hich is code for horsepower, nd wears funky 440 decals just like they did in the '60s. Simple chrome bumpers, lain-Jane taillights, nd a minimum of ornamentation make a point just as well as racing stripes and a rear wing ever could. The black interior is entirely new and restored to show standards using correct materials and patterns. Sure, t's no frills, ut in 1969, f you were someone of limited means who still wanted to go out and have fun at the track, his was the only way to travel. However, hile a majority of A12s had bench sets, his one carries correct buckets and a console, hich make the driving experience a lot more inviting. Even the original gauges, ll of which have been restored, over just the basics, eaving things like a tachometer to the new owner. There's also an AM radio in the dash, nother no-frills piece that suggests anything but all-out speed was superfluous. Carpets, oor panels, eadliner, ash pad, t's all new and looks fantastic with a great Mopar vibe that shows really well. The trunk is neatly finished with gray carpet, hich isn't exactly authentic, ut you certainly can't argue with how good it looks and it definitely helps with noise and heat. There are those who will claim that the A12's 440 Six-Pack was every bit a match for the Hemi, nd who are we to argue? The fresh 1971-vintage 440 found here was installed just a few hundred miles ago and snarls to life through a correct Six-Pack induction system that sounds downright predatory. Fully detailed with Hemi Orange paint, proper air cleaner, nd plain stamped steel Mopar valve covers, his engine looks like a physical manifestation of horsepower. That's a big chunk of iron, o power steering was included, s well as power front disc brakes. The freshly rebuilt (and matching-numbers) TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic snaps off shifts like rifle shots, nd the 8.75-inch Sure Grip rear end is full of 3.23 gears that make the car surprisingly street-friendly. Stock cast iron exhaust manifolds dump into a 2.5-inch exhaust system that sounds awesome and makes no bones about its intentions. Most A12s wore basic black steel wheels, nd the restorer was careful to replicate the look here, rapping them in 215/65/15 BFGoodrich redline radials for the perfect look.If you cherish performance, ew muscle cars are more pure in their pursuit of it than the A12 Mopars, nd this awesome tribute delivers all the thrills you'd expect.
