Plymouth Deluxe 1939 Description

You should plan on seeing more four-door sedans as hot rods, and this 1939 Plymouth Deluxe is a great example of why that's an awesome future to live in. Sleek, low, fast, and family-friendly, it's the rod that gets everything right, and with a big pile of awards behind it, you know it's well-built and ready to enjoy. It's hard to miss this awesome Magnetic Red Plymouth, which was one of the most striking designs of the late 1930s. The integrated headlights were a new thing in the industry and the sweeping chrome and stainless trim look like they belong on a much more upscale machine. Looking closely, you'll note the roof has been chopped, which gives this everyday Plymouth an altogether new look. It's long, low, and sinister today. The chop job was beautifully done, and it's especially difficult on four-door cars because there are two sets of doors to get right, but the guys in charge of this one totally nailed it. Gaps are good, the doors swing easily, and it closes up as well as it did when it was stock. Magnetic Red is a Corvette color and has a deep, rich glow to it that comes from a big of metallic and pearl in the finish, and it's striking on this Plymouth. All the original trim remains, from the stainless inserts in the grille to the strips of brightwork that run along the body, and there are some tasteful graphics just underneath, mirroring the trim's curve. LED '39 Ford taillights are frenched into the rear fenders, but the other bits are original equipment; even the original fuel filler cap is still intact. The interior is modern and comfortable, designed for long-distance cruising in comfort. A pair of modern leather buckets from a Volvo (yes, a Volvo!) anchor the front and the rear bench was upholstered to match, giving it a very complete look. Simple door panels give it a finished look without appearing to be trying too hard and black carpets throughout tie it all together. The dash is the original Plymouth unit, but a custom gauge insert holds a full set of Auto Meter dials, and there's a custom-fabricated lower panel for things like the Vintage Air A/C system. A tilt steering column with a beautiful banjo-style wheel continues the '30s theme and there's a floor-mounted shifter for just a bit of attitude. That little device on top of the dash is called a "trafficator," and it's a period accessory originally designed to allow the driver to see overhead stop lights when his car was equipped with an exterior sun visor, but it works equally well in the chopped sedan today. And for long trips, you get a surprisingly large trunk complete with a space-saver spare for emergencies. The engine is a faithful 350 cubic inch Chevy crate motor topped with a traditional Holley carburetor, polished intake manifold, Mallory distributor, and a bunch of chrome and stainless trim. It runs great and pulls the car around well enough to be genuinely fun to drive. There's a power master cylinder for the 4-wheel disc brakes and with a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, it's a peerless highway cruiser. A custom A-arm front suspension offers rack-and-pinion steering and there's a 9-inch Ford rear on leaf springs holding up the rear. The custom-made dual exhaust system tucks up neatly in the frame and doesn't get in the way, even with that lowered stance and staggered 215/50/17 front and 255/45/17 rear tires on polished Torque Thrust hoops.Beautifully built and just plain beautiful, this is a nicely finished rod that's ready to enjoy right away. Unusual, yes, but you'll have the only one at every show, and that's something that the guys in their 2-doors probably can't say. Call now!
