Plymouth Valiant 1973 Description
Attention all MOPAR and A-Body enthusiasts! I have for sale a 1973 Plymouth Scamp that is in great shape and is ready for its next owner. Please read my entire description and ask any questions before bidding or buying. I can provide additional photos upon request. In-person inspections are welcome and encouraged. Scamp is located in Reno, Nevada.
This is a 1973 Plymouth Scamp with a 225 slant six engine and an automatic transmission in original condition. Everything works on this car EXCEPT the air conditioning, the windshield wipers, the trunk light, and the glove box light. I purchased this Scamp in January 2015 from my neighbor. The Scamp had sat in his yard for many years, so a great deal of work was done over the last two years to get it into the shape it is in now. Here’s a summary of the work I have done to this Scamp:
BODY:
The Scamp had new paint applied in the summer of 2015. The remnants of the vinyl roof were removed. Also, the back glass was removed and all traces of rust were cleaned out. There was a small hole that had rusted away in the passenger rear quarter panel behind the rear wheel, so this was cut out and new steel welded in. The entire body was sanded (the roof to bare metal), primed and professionally painted. The body was painted in the stock factory color per the VIN plate– Rallye Red – and the roof was painted in white. All this paint and body work was done by a professional shop here in Reno and cost about $3,900. I have the receipt to prove it and pictures of the Scamp before the paint work and while it was in the shop at different stages if someone is interested. There is one chip in the paint on the driver’s door which was the result of me installing a new door hinge spring - see photos. Other than that, the paint has held up great over the last two years and there are no dings or dents that I can see.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
The cooling system was flushed, new thermostat, new radiator hoses, and new heater hoses installed,
New belts,
New NAPA alternator and regulator,
New NAPA ignition coil,
New NAPA starter,
New upper motor mount.
FUEL SYSTEM:
The fuel system has been completely replaced:
New fuel tank,
New tank sending unit,
New fuel pump,
All new rubber fuel lines,
Carburetor completely rebuilt; new choke diaphragm installed.
SUSPENSION/BRAKES:
In the summer of 2015 new brake wheel cylinders and shoes were installed on all four wheels and new flexible brake lines installed in the front. New KYA shock absorbers were also installed and new Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires were installed –all these partshave less than 1,500 miles on them.
OTHER:
The automatic transmission was serviced in the summer of 2016 and the differential fluid changed. New speedometer cable installed in late 2016.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION:
The Scamp was tuned up the last weekend in March 2017, with new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor; fresh oil change and a new air filter installed. This car is a reliable daily driver! Ready to go!
The next owner should plan on addressing a few items. The spare tire needs replaced; the rim is fine, but the tire leaks. The windshield wipers do not function; not sure why, as the switch was tested and seems to work. The valve lash needs to be checked and most likely adjusted as the motor is a little noisy. I will post a video of the motor running if anyone is interested. And finally, the air conditioning system does not function, although it appears to be complete. While replacing the rear shocks one of the threaded studs on the shockplate broke. I drilled and tapped the stud, so the shock is held on by a bolt - see photo. This repair has held for two years and works fine, but I will include two replacement shock plates should the next owner wish to install them. I will also include the rubber bumper pads, which I removed for aesthetic reasons.
The interior of the Scamp is in fair condition. I haven’t done any work to the interior, so the dash is cracked and the head rests are discolored from years of sitting in the Nevada sun. The carpet is worn and the wood grain on the dash face is flaking off. The seat vinyl is in OK shape, with no rips or tears, but the seat foam is noticeably less full under the driver’s side of the seat. There is some damage to the interior pillars – see photos. Basically what you’d expect from an original interior of a car of this vintage.
I believe I have accurately described the condition of this Scamp. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a similar one in nicer shape for my price. This could make a fun daily driver, or a great candidate for a V-8 conversion. This Scamp is almost 45 years old, so keep expectations real please. As noted, in-person inspections are encouraged.
