Plymouth Road Runner 1974 Description

First let me say that this is not my car although I did own it previously. If anything has changed, it has changed for the better as the exhaust system has been replaced, the windshield replaced due to a small chip and the A/C restored and updated to R-134A. The photos and video in this ad are when I owned the car in 2015.

I am now auctioning this 1974 Plymouth Roadrunner for a friend who doesn’t do eBay and is a well-known classic and muscle car dealership. In doing so, I will be acting as an agent for this dealership. The owner, who is a friend and someone that I have known for over 20 years, founded his dealership in 1996 and has been a veteran of the car business for over 30 years. All of his vehicles are chosen for the highest standards and quality. A careful and complete analysis is done on every one before they offered for sale.

As to myself, I am a (67) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, I am retired from managing a Correctional Facility here in Maine and had worked for the Maine Department of Corrections for (40) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to who they are dealing with. Also, please check out my eBay feedback that is 100% after (1,173) transactions. Many of my transactions have been muscle cars, which I have sold to individuals all over the country as well as Canada, England, France, Switzerland, Australia and the Netherlands. My reputation for honesty is well known amongst muscle car lovers.

Here is a little history on the 1974 Road Runner.

Yes, the Road Runner was based on the cartoon, and came complete with a horn that went beep beep! And an ad campaign featuring Wiley Coyote. The idea behind the Road Runner had been running around Highland Park for a while, but management had turned it down. Reportedly, it was eventually produced “despite”management opposition. The Roadrunner was not fragile. Unlike some sports cars (such as the Corvette), it was built for serious street work, which might be why so many have survived. The Roadrunner was reportedly a favorite of moonshiners, faster than almost any police car and tough enough to take practically any bump, with good ground clearance to boot.

1974 was the final year for the Belvidere/Satellite-based Road Runner ... in one sense. In 1975, Plymouth “downsized”the C-bodyFuryand dropped Belvidere and Satellite. It would be equally valid to say that they merely renamed the B-bodies to Fury. In any case, the appearance of the Plymouth Road Runner changed again, this time matching the1975 Plymouth Fury. 1975 sales, just over seven thousand, were a new low point, and it should come as no surprise that there was no 1976 Road Runner.

The Road Runner package did come back, switching to thePlymouth Volare, but no sales figures are available for those.

Those who know and appreciate what the Road Runner has meant in the past will be glad to learn that the 1974 Road Runner has lost none of its sporty appeal. Its basic equipment proves it is still a well-put-together performance car with the emphasis upon the basics. There's a standard 318 CID V-8 with dual exhausts and bright chrome exhaust tips. Floor-mounted, all-synchro-mesh, 3-speed manual transmission. Front and rear sway bars. Front disc brakes. G70 x 14 raised white-letter tires mounted on Rallye wheels. A performance hood. Heavy-duty springs. Rallye instrument cluster. Special Road Runner Dress-up body stripe and identification. And the distinctive “Beep-Beep" horn lets everyone know it’s a Road Runner. And Road Runner has all of these standard Satellite engineering features: Torsion-bar suspension. Unibody construction. And the Electronic Ignition System. It can give you up to 35% more starting voltage than non-electronic systems for fast, consistent starts. Then team it up with our dependable sporty four-on-the-floor with a Hurst Shifter. Other options to consider for your Road Runner are a Performance Axle Package and a Handling Package. You can make the outside something special, too. Chrome-styled Road Wheels. Dual Racing Mirrors (chrome or painted). Hood Tape Treatment. Hood Tie-down Pins.

The Road Runner comes with a standard simulated wood-grain Rallye cluster. Switches and controls are located on the left, while gauges and indicators are on the right. Space is provided for either an optional tachometer or clock.

1974 Plymouth Road Runner Production Numbers:

9,646 1974 Road Runners were produced;

6,453 1974 Road Runners were produced with the 318ci engine;

212 1974 Road Runners were produced with the 318ci engine and Hurst 4-Speed.

The following is simply my own extrapolation figure and should not be used as an accurate number.

Extrapolation by numbers:

212 1974 Road Runners were produced with the 318ci engine and Hurst 4-Speed.

9.3% of all 1974 Road Runners were painted Spinnaker White; (See Extrapolation Sheet in ID Photos)

20 1974 Road Runners were produced with the 318ci engine and Hurst 4-Speed and painted Spinnaker White. (Extrapolating at 9.3%)

Here are a few neat facts regarding this Road Runner:

Only 212 produced; (Possibly 20 with paint. Possible 1 with V88 stripe delete and vinyl top.)

· 46,000 original miles;

· Hurst Pistol Grip shifter mated to a 4-speed manual transmission;

· Sure-Grip rear axle;

· Matching numbers throughout;

· Working A/C which was converted to R-134A;

· Unmolested with no modifications;

· Near mint original bucket seat interior;

A true “Time Capsule”, this 1974 Plymouth Road Runner is a completely numbers matching “SURVIVOR” car with the original Broadcast Sheet. It is powered by the 318ci V8 and 2BBL carburetor backed up with the A-833 4-speed transmission which as you have seen in my documentation, is a super rare combination. Putting the rubber to the road is the 8¼ Sure-Grip rear axle with a 3.21:1 ratio.

This is a wonderful specimen of a very rare and unmolested Road Runner. Brought up to New England from Virginia in the spring of 2013 after being purchased from the original owner. This fine automobile was originally ordered back in 1974 from “Ted Curry Motors, Inc.”, a Plymouth dealer in Petersburg Virginia. It spent the next 39 years in Boykins Virginia with the original owner. This Road runner was a special order, stripe delete with the vinyl top, a true gentleman's Mopar muscle car and believed to make this Road Runner a special order one-of-one car. (Unverified)

This unmolested beauty has all the original documents, from the original window sticker and bill of sale, even the original owner’s first registration, Virginia Title (copy), Virginia antique license plate and more. At the time of original purchase minor modifications were done at the Plymouth dealership before leaving the lot. These were good additions and included wheel opening moldings and front and rear bumper guards. The original owner mentioned to the second owner that in the fall of 1974 he also had aftermarket A/C added at the local dealership.
The car starts, runs and drives perfectly, with the heavy-duty suspension, front and rear sway bars, it feels very firm and solid without any squeaks or rattles and goes down the road like it did back in 1974. The car has no leaks and does not leave drops of fluid or stains on the floor below.
All interior and exterior lights work. This Road Runner still retains most of its original paint, all of its original body panels and all of the original interior. Very dependable and enjoyable, and an absolute pleasure to drive. This car has been very well maintained and I have confidence in its absolute excellent reliability and drivability.

This is simply a no excuses, wicked nice and super rare Mopar and I urge any perspective buyer to look at all of the photos and the video and decide for themselves whether this is what they want and need.

Exterior: This “Special Order” stripe delete with vinyl roof 1974 Plymouth Road Runner has what is believed to be (Based on the information passed on from the three previous owners to me.) the original EW1 Spinnaker White paint which holds an excellent shine. The Road Runner is sporting the J54 Power-Bulge Hood and all of the original rust free body panels. All panels have excellent fit, gaps and alignment. The car is solid top to bottom. The light gold vinyl top was replaced in 2007 and done right with a factory style fit and is in excellent condition. All the stainless trim, moldings, and chrome are in very good condition including the dealer installed wheel well moldings. The fourteen inch Argent painted Rally Wheels with chrome hubs are in great shape, with new later period radial white letter tires. All of the glass is original, accept the windshield, and is clear and blemish free.

Interior: The original light gold bucket seat interior is in excellent shape, from the headliner to the dash and rear deck, all are near perfect. The original carpet is extra clean and not showing much of any wear, with minimal fading it is in overall great original condition. The door panels and rear side panels are all original and in excellent like new condition. Note that this is an RM21 2-door coupe and it comes with fixed quarter windows. (The rear windows do not go down and there are no window cranks.) The seats front and rear are in fabulous original condition, although there is a small puncture on the front passenger bucket seat, which is barely noticeable. The center console is completely intact and extra clean with no fading or cracks. The center console compartment door opens and closes as it should. The Hurst Pistol-Grip four speed shifter is clean and in near perfect condition. The Hurst heavy duty, 4-Speed manual transmission shifts smoothly through the gears with ease. The Rallye gauge instrument cluster is super clean and blemish free, all of the lenses are clear, and the instruments functioning properly. The original factory wood grain steering wheel is well preserved and in excellent condition. The odometer currently reads 46,000 original documented miles. This is a non-smoker car,the interior smells like a new car, no musty old car odor that you tend to find in older cars. To the best of my knowledge every switch, knob and lever operates correctly. All lights work (dash, back-up warning light, high beam, low beam, blinkers, back up lights, side markers, brake lights fender mounted blinkers). The speedometer, gas gauge, temperature gauge, amp gauge, cigarette lighter, Beep-Beep Horn, wipers, heater and defrost are functioning properly. The original AM radio operates as new, the station selector panel and preset push buttons all work as they should.The A/C has been updated and blows cold.

Engine: Original 318 engine block, heads, intake, carburetor, distributor, air cleaner assembly and wiper motor. Dealer installed York A/C pump. The original numbers matching drivetrain has never been apart or modified in any way. Mechanically the 318 motor purrs like a kitten, you can barely hear it run. Plenty of power.

Trunk: The trunk pan is rust free and rock solid original. The trunk has the original jack and tools, spare tire, original trunk mat and jack instruction decal.

Undercarriage: The undercarriage of the car is solid and rust free. The frame rails and floors are all rust free and rock solid original. It still retains the original number’s matching A-833 4-speed manual transmission and the original (never apart) 10-bolt Sure-Grip rear axle with a 3.21:1 ratio. It has excellent front end, front disk brakes, shocks and a newer dual exhaust system with factory chrome Machine Gun exhaust tips.
