Pontiac Firebird 1970 Description

This is 1 of only 647 Pontiac Fi

This is 1 of only 647 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400’s produced in 1970 with the optional M21 close ratio 4 spd transmission and 3.73 ratio safe-t-track differential. It is a PHS documented, original numbers matching car that came factory equipped with the following options: power steering (variable-ratio), power brakes, tach and rally gauges w/clock, AM push button radio with rear speaker, formula steering wheel, deluxe interior with interior console, Soft-Ray tinted glass (windshield only), custom trim, 14 x7" Rally II wheels with F70-14 raised white letter tires. The following options have been added, but are not original to the car: tilt steering column, factory AM/FM push button radio, NOS 14 x 7" wheel trim rings and a 3 pcs rear spoiler.

Vehicle Condition: The following descriptions are based on my opinion of the vehicles condition at the time of this listing. I have made every effort to describe this vehicle as accurately as possible and have made every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects. Although I have restored many cars and consider myself to be very knowledgeable, please be aware that I am a hobbyist and not a ASE certified mechanic. It is strongly recommended that the buyer have this vehicle professionally inspected at it’s current location prior to auction end. Car is mechanically sound with no major mechanical, suspension or electrical related problems that I am aware of at the time of this listing. However, as with any 46 year old vehicle there may be issues that need addressed that don't necessary affect the overall drivability of the car. I have outlined the one's that I am aware of in the descriptions below.

Exterior Body: A complete frame-on restoration of the exterior body began in April of 2014. At which time the car, still wearing it's factory Polar White paint was stripped to bare metal in order to assess the true condition of the body. As suspected, no evidence of any major collision damage was found and the car still had all of it’s original body panels. The floor pans and undercarriage were solid largely due to the fact that the car was purchased and remained in the Pacific Northwest since new. The areas that required the most attention were the lower rear quarter panels, lower fender sections, front windshield channel and trunk pan. All of these areas had extensive rust that required patch panels so I had the car transported to a reputable auto body shop where the metal work was professionally done. Immediately upon the cars return, the exterior body was re-surfaced, cleaned and etched with PPG DX579/DX520, then shot with 2 coats of PPG DP40LF epoxy primer prior to moving it into my insulated shop. Over the next 2 years each body panel was meticulously worked to within 1/8” of it’s original shape then smoothed out with a skim coat of Evercoat “Rage” polyester filler. The original Endura bumper was sandblasted to bare material and all cracks were prepped and repaired with a 2 part epoxy filler made especially for that material. Once final assembly was done, the car received multiple coats of PPG K36 primer/surfacer in between block sanding's until maximum flatness was achieved. Finally, in March of 2016, two coats of PPG OMNI MBC (GM code 75) Cardinal Red basecoat were applied, followed by three coats of Advantage #550 Urethane Clear. As of this listing, the only thing that’s been done to the paint is a quick color sanding, compound and polish to remove the dust in the clear coat. The following things still need to be done: the left front fender needs to be adjusted forward about 1/8" and there are three area’s on the drivers door that will need a paint touch up (see photo), the trunk lid doesn't stay open (torsion bars need replaced), the windshield wipers need to be installed, the chrome rocker molding and cowl weather-stripping needs to be purchased and installed. If your looking for a nice summer cruiser to drive and take to local car shows, I believe this car fits that description (I personally have taken this car to local events and have many compliments on it). However, if your looking for a show quality paint job, please be aware that more hours of color sanding will be required in order to knock down the remaining orange peel and get the clear coat completely flat.

Interior: The Interior has been 98% restored and the following items have been replaced: seat covers, headliner, carpet, package tray, door hinges, door sill plates, headlight and courtesy lamp switches, heater core, roof rail and door weather-stripping. All metal interior trim pieces were sandblasted then primed with PPG DP40LF epoxy primer before top coating with SEM Gloss Black interior trim paint. All ABS plastic pieces were thoroughly cleaned and top coated with SEM Color Coat Landau Black flexible coating. As of this listing, the following things still need to be done: Passenger side kick panel needs replaced (broken vent actuator cable), AM/FM radio doesn't work (no speakers), cigarette burn on the interior console needs repaired..

Drivetrain: When I purchased this car, It had been sitting for over 10 years and the original numbers matching motor/transmission were fully intact. Upon getting the car home I quickly determined that the engine was seized up and opted to removed both the engine and transmission and put them in storage until I was ready to put the car on the road. Shortly afterwards, I came across a recently rebuilt 1970 XH code 400ci motor with RAM AIR III heads sitting in a 69 Le Mans that was being parted out. Also included, was a Muncie M20 4 spd transmission making it the perfect choice for an temporary drivetrain to make the car drivable. As of this listing, that drivetrain is still in the car connected to the Formula’s original 3.73 ratio safe-t-track (12 bolt) differential. It is a very strong runner that starts right away, doesn’t smoke, overheat or burn oil. The only thing that I am aware of at the current time is that the rear main seal is starting to leak, especially after the car hasn’t been ran in a while. I recently took the original motor to a reputable machine shop where it was disassembled and found to have a broken crankshaft. The block and head castings were then hot tanked and magnafluxed and determined to be rebuildable. I have since found a replacement crankshaft and that, along with BOTH THE ORIGINAL MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION AND THE CURRENT MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION ARE INCLUDED WITH THE SALE OF THIS CAR.

Suspension, Steering and Brakes: Car handles and stops the way it should with no major issues. The only thing I've noticed is that the rear leaf springs are a little creaky when your going over speed bumps.

Electrical: At the time of the exterior body restoration, the original wire harness was pulled, cleaned and thoroughly inspected. The forward lamp, engine, dash and intermediate sections were still in good shape and re-installed. The rear lamp harness was not usable and has been replaced with a new one. As of this listing, the following things still need to be addressed: The horn and clock are not working, the front turn signal/park lamps are not functional (wiring is fine but the lamp housing sockets are bad, I have since found replacements and they are included in the sale of the car).
