Pontiac GTO 1964 Description

The year 1964 is known for a number of reasons—the Beatles, for instance—but it was the Pontiac GTO that caused the biggest stir if you were into street performance. At that time, powerful mid-size cars had been marketed primarily as a way to get cars on the racetrack; practicality was not their strong suit. The GTO helped changed that paradigm; this was a street machine through and through. This car is special not simply because it was a convertible, but it was also sold new at Ace Wilson’s Royal Pontiac right in the epicenter of Detroit’s exploding street scene in Royal Oak, Michigan. In addition to that important association from new, this car has now benefitted from a concours-grade restoration that has just been completed in 2017 to GTOAA standards, focusing on its as-built-new configuration using many NOS parts. Indeed, this car has not been driven since the restoration was completed. Special-ordered new with the desirable Jubilee Gold paint, under the hood is a date-code correct 389 CI V-8 engine built and detailed by marque experts John and Paul Glasgo. This powerplant has the correct 4-barrel carburetor, as well as the correct distributor and water pump. Like many from that inaugural year, the engine is backed by a 3-speed synchromesh manual transmission and 3.23:1 rear axle. Luxury would be the word when considering the power convertible top lowering down to reveal the sporty bucket seats. Back then, “Can’t Buy Me Love” came though the Top 40 stations found on the AM radio. The look is completed with whitewall tires and custom wheel discs, the sort of dress-up items which would garner attention up on nearby Woodward Avenue. After all, opposites attract and dates liked style; this car has it. You can relive those glory days yourself in a stunning representation of the year that opened up the GTO legend.
